No Word on Peterson’s Status for Friday’s Game

Peterson

The Vikings are still mum on if  first-round draft pick Adrain Peterson will be playing in the teams first preseason game coming up on Friday night at home vs the St.Louis Rams.  Head coach Brad Childress said that playing the running back, who has been bothered by soreness due to a hip pointer, is still up in the air and that a decision may not be made until game day.  “I’m not trying to be coy about it,” Childress said. “I just want to make sure that when he opens up, he can open up. You want guys to be able to protect themselves, which he can do. But part of protecting yourself is to be able to open up and run away. If you can’t do that, you can’t protect yourself. So we’ll see.”

If you ask Peterson, he says he’s ready to go at it.  He has been on the practice field the past few days, and feels that playing is a no-brainer.  He said on Wednesday that he is ready to feel the jitters of his first pro game.   “I’m sure I’ll feel the chill, my first college game [at Oklahoma], I was a little nervous,” Peterson said. “I’m sure I’ll be excited going out there [Friday], but I’ll know how to handle it.”

The high profile back missed 10 practices over the summer – five with the hip pointer. He did go at it in both Wednesday workouts, and despite neither being full pads, seemed to have that excitement in his words about the chance to take the field Friday.  As far as Childress goes, he is thinking long term, and knows that an injured Peterson to start the season is not going to do the Vikings much good.  Despite Adrian’s eagerness to play, look for cooler heads to prevail and for him to sit out this first week of preseason and get more healthy for what really matters – the regular season.
