Rookie running back Andre Peterson rushed for 102 yards and turned a screen pass into a 60-yard touchdown play to lead the Vikings to a 24-3 win over the Atlanta Falcons in the season opener for both teams. Peterson was the most effective offensive player of the day for the Vikings, while the defense limited the Falcons to 265 total yards while sacking quarterback Joey Harrington six times. The defense also put points on the board, with Kevin Williams and Antoine Winfield each picking off the pass and taking it the distance. The Vikings started the season with a win for the second straight time under coach Brad Childress.
