DE Scott Out For Year

Darrion Scott, Minnesota Vikings defensive endBad luck has seemed to follow Minnesota Vikings defensive end Darrion Scott this season.  Firstly he regretted the lowest tender offer given by the Vikings during the offseason, then he proceeded to lose his starting spot to Kenechi Udeze during training camp.  to top it all off, on Monday, Scott broke a bone in his foot that will require a pin to be inserted, according to his agent, Tim DiPiero.

Scott, a third-round pick in 2004, started 15 games in 2005 and 13 games last season.  run defense was Scott’s forte, despite the fact that he registered 4 sacks in 2005 and led the team with 5 1/2 sacks in 2006.  Even with this going for him, his time with the Vikings could possibly be over.  The Vikings have depth on the defensive line and apparently the team holds versatility in high esteem.

Now with Scott out of the rotation, the Vikings want to get a look at Erasmus James; during the preseason, Vikings head coach Brad Childress stated that when he was healthy, James would reclaim his starting spot at DE.  On Monday, Childress said that James’ knee was no longer an issue.  Scott’s versatility will no doubt be missed as he played both inside and outside; but again, his absence may mean more playing time for other individuals.

There’s Fred Evans who has been inactive for the past three games; there’s also rookie Brian Robison (who leads the team in sacks) and Jayme Mitchell.  But it appears that neither of them are suited to play inside of the defensive line.  The Vikings in the meantime have promoted rookie guard Brian Daniels from the practice squad to take Scott’s place.  As of this writing, the Vikings have not worked out anyone and they have a vacancy on their practice squad.
