Childress names Jackson starter vs. Oakland

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tarvaris JacksonIt is not clear whether Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brooks Bollinger’s performance was the reason, but team head coach Brad Childress announced that Tarvaris Jackson will be behind center when the Vikings host the Oakland Raiders this Sunday.

On Monday, Childress told Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press, “I do feel like coming out of training camp (Jackson) was the best quarterback, so I would say you would probably end up being back with Tarvaris.”  I suppose that’s coach-speak for “Brooks absolutely stunk this weekend so I’ll go back to Tarvaris this coming Sunday”.  Jackson, who was named the starter back in training camp, was injured during the San Diego game back on November 4; he suffered a concussion.

Childress also said that he still needs more time this season to ascertain whether Jackson can become the team’s QB of the future.  With seven games left for the team, I’d say that time is running woefully short.  Bollinger and QB Kelly Holcomb have been ineffective when out on the field – the only difference between them and Jackson is that Bollinger and Holcomb have not been as turnover-prone.

Personally what I think what will happen is that when next year’s draft is complete, the Vikings will have drafted a QB (Woodson, Brennan or some other high-profile draft pick), and they will retain Jackson and waive both Bollinger and Holcomb – although it is entirely possible one of the vets may be retained to mentor the draftee.
