Seahawks Top Vikings 34-17 in Preseason Action

Jackson throws

The first pre-season game between Seattle and Minnesota was quite interesting. Not being a hardcore fan of either team, I like being able to subjectively review the different teams. It is hard to make an assumption about how well a team will do during the season from such a small sample from the starters. However, we can review individual performances.

What stood out the most to me was the play of the starting quarterbacks. Hasselbeck was poised, but that was kind of expected. The real surprise was how sharp Tavaris Jackson played. Tavaris was declared the starter, but with all of the Brett Favre hype, I am sure Vikings fans were relieved to see him play solidly for first 2 drives of the game. In fact, on those two drives, Vikings’ superstar Peterson did not even touch the ball. He did however serve as a great decoy for the pass offense.

Jared Allen was in the backfield lots of times, but failed to come away with a sack despite playing well. Overall the Vikings defense looked ‘ok’, but not great, and they seem to have a few holes to fill before the season starts. The main issue was run defense; I know it was mostly 2nd and 3rd string but the Seahawks runningbacks made it look easy. In fact Maurice Morris averaged 10.3 yards per carry against them which they can not be happy with.

The other two standouts had to be Bernard Berrian and backup QB Seneca Wallace. Berrian was exciting to watch, but could have been even better. On two occasions he was a half step from breaking away for a touchdown. Wallace did a great job spreading the ball around and using his check downs. He threw three touchdowns and seemed to manage the offense well.

Overall the Seahawks seemed to have more depth at key positions, but the Vikings starting offense seemed more explosive. The Seahawks came away with the win 34-17 and seemed solid on both sides of the ball. I would assume that they would love to carry some momentum from the preseason on into the regular season.
