Not Pretty; But a Win as Vikings Top Saints 30-27

If style points were involved, the Vikings probably would have been thrown out after the first quarter.  Of course that’s not the way the NFL works, and that is why today the Vikings are back to .500 at 2-3 instead of 1-4.  Helped out by a blocked field goal for a TD, a later missed field goal, and a wrong route run by Bernard Berrian that ended up in a TD, the Vikings pulled out a 30-27 win in New Orleans.

Down 7-0 after an early Saints score, cornerback Antoine Winfield got the Vikings on the board after recovering Saints kicker Martin Gramatica’s blocked kick in the first quarter and took it back for a TD.  In the second quarter, he set up a Vikings TD with a forced fumble on a sack of Drew Brees that he recovered at the New Orleans 5-yard line.

Chester Taylor threw that score on third down that gave Minnesota a 17-10 lead in the second quarter.  The Vikings went up 20-10 at the half with a 33-yard field goal from Ryan Longwell with :04 left in the half.  The Saints bounced back, as Reggie Bush took back the first of two punt returns with 1:46 left in the third quarter to make it 20-17.
After Gramatica kicked a 53-yard field goal to tie the game at 20 with 13:20 left, Bush again ran through the Vikings punt defense, as he took another kick back 64 yards to make it 27-20 with 11:36 to go.  The Vikings rallied with a little luck, as Gus Frerotte led the team down the field, and on wrong route run by Bernard Berrian, he found the WR for a 33-yard score with 7:10 left to tie the game at 27.

New Orleans took the ball over with 7:06 left, and went from their own 17 to the Vikings 28 with 1:58 left.  Garmatica through, missed a 46-yard field goal that gave the Viks the ball with 1:58 left.  Frerotte took the team from the 36 to the Saints 12, helped by a huge 42-yard penalty as Frerotte was trying to hit Berrian that put the ball on the Saints 14.  Longwell kicked a 30-yard field goal with :13 left for the game-winner.

The Vikings come home for a NFC North game with Lions on Sunday at 12pm.
