Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that quarterback Tarvaris Jackson will get the start on Sunday when the Vikings face the Cardinals for the first time in Arizona since a force-out call forced the Vikings out of the 2003 playoffs.
Per Jensen, starter Gus Frerotte’s injured back is not expected to sufficiently heal before Sunday.
Frerotte did not participate in practice on Wednesday, along with defensive end Jared Allen (knee), tackle Artis Hicks (elbow), receiver Darius Reynaud (foot), and defensive end Brian Robison (knee).
Jackson started — and lost — the first two games of the season. Frerotte has been 8-3 as the starter.
But Jackson was solid in relief of Frerotte on Sunday against the Lions, completing eight of 10 passes and generating a passer rating of 143.8.
As we suggested during our weekly visit with Paul Allen of KFAN, coach Brad Childress might be whipping out the old Denny Green “100 percent” rule as to Frerotte. This would allow Childress to ride Jackson’s hot hand unless and until Jackson cools off, at which point Childress will declare Frerotte to be back at 100 percent.
