Allen: “The Only Reason I’m not a Marine is Because I Could Play Football”

Jared Allen, Larry Fitzgerald, Will Witherspoon, and Danny Clark are finishing up their USO tour overseas, visiting U.S. troops in Iraq. The trip has been a success and nfl.com has a running blog of the event. It is worth a read, and full of many great moments including Vikings defensive end Jared Allen speaking with Cpl. Matt Van Ens, a Lions fan, about the play where he chased Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky out the back of the end zone. Allen also discusses his family’s tradition of men in his family coming down to two options: football or the marines. Allen also had a humorous moment where he and Fitzgerald insisted on trying the “in-flight meal” while riding in a C130.

For someone like Allen who has seen his fair share of off the field incidents, it is good to see him going the extra distance to make a positive impact outside the lines. The four men have signed thousands of autographs over the last few days, and reportedly have not turned down a single request. One soldier commented that “when the [football] games come on, it’s how we mark that another week has passed.”
