Karl Paymah – What’s The Deal?

It is reported that free agent cornerback Karl Paymah is meeting with Vikings officials on Friday. Paymah has made an unusually high number of visits so far in free agency having already met with the Ravens, Browns, Buccaneers, and the 49ers. One has to wonder why Paymah, who is not exactly a well known player, has generated so much interest.

Here’s a snap shot of who he is and his production thus far in his career:

* Age: 26
* Height: 6’ 0”
* Weight: 290 lbs.
* Years played: 4
* Games Started: 5
* Career Tackles: 101
* Sacks: 0
* Passes Defended: 12
* Interceptions: 3
* Forced Fumbles: 0

Okay… so did that clear anything up for anybody? Because it sure didn’t help me see what the fuss is all about. The only stat that really stuck out to me as great is his age. Age 26 is good time to nab players who are entering their prime. Also, to be fair, he saw limited time while playing behind the likes of Dre Bly and Champ Bailey in Denver.

The former third round pick out of Washington State does make sense for the Vikings in their effort to upgrade depth at cornerback and also improve the quality of their special teams. It’ll be interesting to see if the Vikings allow themselves to get into a bidding war for a backup cornerback when they’ve already given new contracts to Charles Gordon and Benny Sapp. Stay tuned.
