Its Show Time!

The Draft will start in just a few moments.  I will update this post with up-to-the-minute updates on picks, trades, and analysis.  Enjoy!

Times are in Central Time Zone.

3:05:  PICK ONE – Stafford goes to the Lions of course.  Hopefully for the Vikings he is the next Joey Harrington instead of the next Matt Ryan.  Stafford will have weapons in Kevin Smith, Calvin Johnson, and Bryant Johnson to help him along in the early years of his career.

3:15:  PICK TWO – Jason Smith goes to the Rams.  Adding him and Jason Brown to the O-line should help Bulger remain upright this year.  The first offensive tackle that the Vikings would love to get their hands on is now off the board.

3:25:  PICK THREE – The Chiefs have made the first big surprise pick of this years draft.  Tyson Jackson is their new defensive end.  Hey, that’s one less player in a position of need off the board for the Vikings.  Doesn’t hurt.

3:33:  PICK FOUR – Aaron Curry goes to the Seahawks.  A very happy Curry will join a somewhat crowded linebacker group in Seattle, but should be able to start from day one and give them the playmaker they were looking for.

3:38: TRADE – The Jets have traded up to #5, presumably to take Mark Sanchez.  The trade involves three Jets players, and their first and second round draft picks.  Wow. Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam, Brett Ratliff are the players.

3:40: PICK FIVE – The Jets have traded up to #5 and selected Mark Snachez, as their new franchise quarterback.  I think this’ll be a big mistake for the Jets, but will work out well for the Browns.  In my opinion, Sanchez is actually a second or third round QB, but now he’s a top 5 QB, and we’ll see what the kid can do.  Less than two years ago, Sanchez couldn’t beat out John David Booty on USC’s roster.  Booty went in the 5th round to the Vikings.

3:51: PICK SIX – The Bengals have selected Andre Smith.  Man, I can’t believe they picked him over Eugene Monroe but the Bengals are still the Bengals.  One more guy off the board that the Vikings are better off without.  Now, let’s see what crazy Al Davis has up his sleeve…

3:58:  PICK SEVEN – The first hour of the draft is just about done and the Raiders drafted Darrius Heyward-Bey.  Heyward-Bey could be a great pickup, or he could be the second coming of Troy Williamson.  I think this is a giant reach, but you never know… meanwhile Eugene Monroe is officially on a slide.

4:05:  PICK EIGHT – The Jaguars probably would’ve liked to get a substantial trade offer, however, they have stayed put at #8 and have to be pleased that Eugene Monroe is still available.  Unfortunately for the Vikings, this ends Monroe’s slide which means that Michael Oher, William Beatty, and Eben Britton are the only tackles of the top six tackles still available.

4:14: PICK NINE – Well, Peterson has his work cut out for him when facing the Packers in coming years.  They have selected B.J. Raji, the monsterous defensive tackle who, as a rookie, will become the Pack’s cornerstone of their new Dom Capers 3-4 defense.  As a Vikings fan, I was hoping the Pack would screw this pick up, but Raji is a heck of a player and will cause trouble for the Vikings starting this season.

4:21 PICK TEN – San Francisco is looking to add some spark to their offense by adding Michael Crabtree.  i have to admit that a part of me was hoping to see Crabtree slip to the Vikings, but I knew that was a HUGE Longshot.

4:26 PICK ELEVEN – The Bills have taken, Aaron Maybin.  This is great for the Vikings because Maybin plays a position in which the Vikings don’t need help.  It also means that Michael Oher has jumped one more hurdle on his way to #22.

4:31 PICK TWELVE – The Broncos have selected Knowshon Moreno.  ESPN is currently ripping on Denver for the pick, but he’s the type of player that will be able to help Kyle Orton find success.

4:33 PICK THIRTEEN – The Redskins got a steal in the draft by selecting Brian Orakpo.  Another solid pick.  Remember, the Skins were so desperate for defensive ends last year, they traded for both Jason Taylor and Erasmus James.

4:35:  Michael Oher, Malcolm Jenkins, Percy Harvin, Vontae Davis, Alex Mack, William Beatty, Eben Britton, Clay Matthews, and Brian Cushing are all still on the board and could be available to the Vikings when they pick in about an hour.

4:41 PICK FOURTEEN:  The Saints needed major help on defense and took the first step towards addressing that need by selecting Malcolm Jenkins.  Jenkins took some flak in the last few weeks, but he’s a steal at this point and will help the saints become a more well-rounded team.

4:45 PICK FIFTEEN:  Brian Cushing was widely speculated to go to the Texans, and he indeed did go to the Texans.  Cushing is a physical specimen, who can use some technique coaching, but should go a long ways towards helping a dubious defense.

4:48:  Michael Oher is still on the board, but the Chargers pick next and they have to be considering Oher here.  If they go another way, then that’ll be very advantageous to the Vikes.

5:02:  the site went down for a minute there… while we were down the Chargers selected Larry English with PICK SIXTEEN and the Browns taded back with the Bucs who selected Josh Freeman at PICK SEVENTEEN.  Michael Oher is still on the board with only a few picks to go.  The Vikings will now not have to face the choice of whether or not to take a QB in round one, as the top three are all gone.

5:06 PICK EIGHTEEN:  The Broncos took Robert Ayers with their second first-rounder.  This seems like a reach, especially with two USC linebackers still on the board.  However, this means that the Vikings three teams between them and Michael Oher, William Beatty, Eben Britton, Alex Mack, Vontae Davis, Clay Matthews, Percy Harvin, or perhaps somebody completly different.

5:10 TRADE:  Freaking weird!  The Browns have traded their first rounder for the third time today.

5:13 PICK NINETEEN:  The Eagles leap frogged the Lions in a trade with the Browns to select Jeremy Maclin.  Wow!  Today gets weirder and weirder.  Maclin is a weird choice to me, especially when you’ve got DeSean Jackson on the team.  Plus, why leap past the Lions to take Maclin, did they really think the Lions might face the ridicule of using their first rounder on another wide out.  Weird, Weird.  But hey, Michael Oher is still on the board.

5:20  PICK TWENTY:  The Lions stayed put with their #20 pick that they recieved as part of the Roy Williams trade with the Cowboys.  They decided to select Brandon Pettigrew.  Pettigrew had some character issues surrounding an alleged scuffle with an officer.  However, his playmaking and blocking abilities are unrivaled by any tight end in this draft, and the Lions seem to be showing a committment to winning games solely off of their offense next year.

5:21 The Browns are on the clock for the fourth time today… and they’ve yet to select a player.  The Vikes pick after them.

5:23  PICK TWENTY ONE:  The Browns finally picked a player!  They took Alex Mack.  I’m really bummed because he was my favorite pick for the Vikings for months and months now.  However, Oher is still on the board and the Vikes are on the clock…
