The First Cap Casualty To Look At

The Vikings were quite inactive in free agency, adding only two special teams type players.  They also were thought to have about $17 million in cap space prior to the draft.  Many people thought that the Vikings were going to be patient, not overpay players during the initial free agency period, and wait to see who comes available.

Well, the first player who is now an unrestricted free agent that the Vikings should have some interest in is LeRoy Hill from Seattle.  With Seattle selecting outside linebacker Aaron Curry fourth overall, they decided to rescind Hill’s franchise tag and allow him to hit the market.

Hill has been one of the most productive weakside linebackers in the league for a couple years now.  He would be a huge addition to the Vikings, and at age 26 would be a great staple on the defense for years to come.  I know Leber is a fan favorite, and I really enjoy watching Leber, but he lacks range as far as playing sideline to sideline and Hill possesses that playmaking ability.

Personally, I think Hill would be a big enough upgrade that the Vikings should go get him.  They have the cap space, he’s a youthful and talented, and he would make a solid defense even better.

Hill was busted for dope a few days prior to the free agency, so he’s a risk… but maybe Childress could just go take a drive with him… and giggle.  Check out this Star Tribune story to get the “giggle” reference from a Q&A with Percy Harvin.
