Minnesota Vikings select –

Asher Allen – CB – Georgia – 5’10” – 195 – He decided to forgo his Sr. season and enter the draft as a Jr. He is a solid cover corner who’s stock may have slipped a bit because of a broken hand suffered last season that effected the way he was able to tackle. He has a quick and compact backpedal, and is able to close explosively on passes in front of him. Very adept at breaking up the pass with his front arm and delivers the powerful hit right after the catch. Has the ability to intimidate the receiver and the playing speed to recover and get back into good position when he loses a step. Consistently reads and reacts to the play correctly. Is not fooled by misdirection plays. A good routes reader. Very good at shedding larger blockers and makes the tackle right after the catch on screens to running backs.

Allen has good catch up speed and displays a second gear. Most importantly for the Vikings, he has good acceleration and elite playing speed to stay with receivers in long coverage.

Last season, he was able to break up nearly half the passes thrown to his side of the field. Has great athleticism, body control and hand-eye coordination. Should be an excellent cover two corner because he is exceptional at cutting in front of the receiver on quick slant routes and is strong enough to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage.

His hands are questionable, and he doesn’t cause a lot of turnovers. But he is very aggressive and tough against the run. He is a good but not great wrap-up tackler.

Allen has the necessary tools to succeed as a pro, but some teams may have backed by his lack of height. But his intangibles and solid character and displayed work ethic should make him an eventual starter for the Purple and Gold.
