Day One Is In The Books

The Vikings had their first mini-camp on Friday, and here’s a look around the web at a few reports coming out of that practice.

As we reported earlier, Percy Harvin did not make it to the mini-camp due to illness.

Younger brother of Larry Fitzgerald, Marcus, had a solid practice in which he only dropped one low pass.  Fitzgerald knows he has some tough competition on the field with him but says, “These guys are all athletes, but I know my will will set me over the top.”  Fitzgerald has not signed with the Vikings, but is at the camp on a tryout basis.

Phil Loadholt made a big impression Friday, as he is now officially listed as the Vikings largest player at 6′ 8″ and 343 lbs.  Coach Childress thinks that Loadholt will be able to use his long reach to fend off speed rushers.

Childress thinks that Loadholt could potentially play both tackle spots, but right now is focused on seeing him compete with Ryan Cook for the right tackle position.

Back in December, the Vikings signed Kenny Onatlolu from the CFL, and the linebacker is thought to be a possible difference maker on special teams this year.

Third round pick, Asher Allen, made a strong impression Friday when he opted to stay late and go over a few things with the Vikings defensive backs coach, Joe Woods.  They made a point to discuss the difference between hashmarks in the NFL as opposed to college.  “It’s different as far as spacing and how quick the ball gets there depending on where the hashmarks are,” Allen said. “I’ll get used to it. Hey, football is football.”

Childress described his most recent 5th round pick, Jasper Brinkley, as one of the biggest and best tacklers in this years draft.  He said, “I mean, he smothers you when he tackles you. He runs through you.”

Marcus Fitzgerald has had a long, hard road to get this tryout with the Vikings, which includes his millionaire brother, Larry, not giving him a job when Marcus asked him to.
