Kenny Onatolu Interviewed By Strib

Kenny Onatolu was a low-profile signing by the Vikings back in December.  The linebacker was brought in due to his recent success in the CFL and also his potential on special teams.  Onatolu was recently interviewed by Judd Zulgad over at the Star Tribune.   The whole interview can be read here, and here’s a small taste of what Onatolu had to say:

Q. Where do you fit in at linebacker?

A. “They have me learning the Sam [strong-side linebacker spot] first. I’m playing actually Sam and Will [weakside]. I played Will in college, I played Will in Canada, but Sam and Will are kind of interchangeable.”

Q. How much do you think you can help the special teams here?

A. “I pride myself in being great on special teams and throughout college and even in Canada I was very good at it. I think that’s what drew a lot of attention here. I’m sure I can come in here and help them. I have really good speed and I have a knack for the ball and I enjoy doing it most of all.”

Q. And that is a key for special teams, right? A lot of guys don’t enjoy it.

A. “A lot of guys look at special teams as, ‘Ugh, I got to go out and do special teams.’ I get real pumped up for it.”

Q. How many NFL teams came after you last winter?

A. ”I had a few calls. I had some calls from the Jets, Miami and then I had some workouts lined up. I had one with Tampa lined up.”

Q. What did you like about the Vikings?

A. “This was my first visit and I talked to the coaches. I knew they needed help on special teams. I figured I’d be able to contribute right there and they are also a great team. They are a very good team and they are a playoff team. It’s always good going to a winning program. You never want to go to a program that’s struggling. You don’t know who is coming in, who is going out. So that was a big part of my decision as well.”
