Vikings have NFL’s Best at Several Positions

Pro Bowl Football
Take a look at the roster. Make the comparisons. The Vikings are absolutely stacked at several positions.

They arguably have the very best offensive linemen in the NFL in Steve Hutchinson. Possibly the best defensive end in Jared Allen, the best running back in Adrian Peterson ( Yes, that includes LaDanian Tomlinson), and the Best defensive tackle tandem in the league in Williams and Williams, Inc.

They also have at or near Pro Bowl quality at middle linebacker with E..J. Henderson ( provided he can come back from that horrendous foot injury ). Also AntoineWinfield is a stud at corner, Bryant McKennie is near Pro bowl level at LT,

Coming on strong – Chad Greenway is fast becoming one of the better outside linebackers in the league with his excellent combination of speed and range. Madieu Williams is underappreciated and would start fo almost any team. Griffin may be a reach here, but if you look at his performance over the last 5 games of 2008 and he merits consideration as an “Up and comer”. One can say much the same for Safety Tyrell Johnson who is relatively unproven, but certainly looks the part.

Solid – Ben Leber is as solid as a rock at strong side LB. As is LG Anthony Herrera. K Ryan Longwell and Punter Matt Kluwe are solid if unspectacular. As is their overall depth at nearly every position.

Big question marks ???? – The speculation begins with RT. Ryan Cook (ouch !) or the newly drafted Phil Loadholt. My guess here is Loadholt takes over the starting RT position about three days into the pre-season and holds it for the next ten years.

Center – The Vikings seemed comfortable with John Sullivan, but at the same time, they’ve been quietly adding players to the roster to compete. Cook could land here, although he is thought to be a bit too tall to play center, it is his natural position. Herrera could also be considered, but it seems a waste to move him from RG where he is a known commodity. It would be like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Positive factors to consider – Back up running back Chester Taylor is as good of a back up runner you will find. A definite starter on about 20 NFL teams right now.

Depth at DE – Ray Edwards and Brian Robison. OK, so Edwards fell a bit short of his prediction of breaking the single season sack record. He still teams up with Robison to provide a good one-two punch at DE.

Percy Harvin and his high wire thrill show. This could be a lot of fun to watch if A) he stays healthy and B) Childress and co. can figure out a way to maximize his talents.
