Back At It!

Well, it’s been about four weeks since my last post, as I spent the month of May preparing for my wedding, getting married, and honeymooning.  I’d like to give a huge thanks to Chris, Aaron, and Matt for keeping the site buzzing with the latest news!  It was all a blast, but I’m glad to be getting myself caught up on Vikings news and wanted to chime in on a few recent Vikings issues.

1.  Brett Favre – Timetables have come and gone a few times now for the whole Favre-to-Minnesota thing and it is anyone’s guess as to how the whole thing will shake out in the end.  However, I have to agree with Mr. Tarkenton’s recent comments, which were pretty much directly in line with my take on the whole Favre thing a month ago, and I continue to think that obtaining Favre would be a bad football move for the Vikings… though it would admittedly be a good business decision.

2.  WilliamsWall – Perhaps the second biggest question facing the Vikings this season is whether or not the NFL will be allowed to suspend Kevin and Pat Williams for their use of StarCaps.  While one must have a pretty good handle on lawyer-speak to understand what the heck is going on here, it is becoming evident that this is far from over still.  On the plus side, if the WilliamsWall is suspended for the first four weeks of this season, I think the Vikings could still fare pretty well against their first four opponents:  Cleveland, Detroit, San Francisco, and Green Bay.

3.  Antoine Winfield – Many people are concerned that he’s been staying away from OTA’s and believe that this might have more to do with his contract status than anything else.  Winfield is getting old for a corner but made his first pro-bowl appearance last season.  While he’s really become a fan favorite in Minnesota, they have a bunch of young talent at that position.  It’s hard to say what will happen here.  On one hand I don’t see the Vikings letting a pro bowl player leave via free agency next offseason without getting some sort of compensation.  On the other hand, it’s tough to give big money to a 32 year old player who will doubtless begin to slow down soon.  His value may do nothing but drop from here on out, so another option is for the Vikings to let Winfield seek a trade.

4.  Harvin & Rice – After this week’s OTA’s the big buzz surrounding the Vikings is coming from an unusual place… the receiving group.  We all know that Bernard Berrian is capable of being an impact player.  However, the buzz is surrounding Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin.  Rice has been a raw and injury-prone player up to this point, but has been impressive in OTAs thus far, and is poised for a breakout year.  Harvin has been labeled a gimmick player by many, but it seems that those who saw him in OTAs would beg to differ.  Instead of being a used only in gimmick plays, Harvin will be expected to be a game changer in a completely unique fashion… in other words, the Vikings think he could change the way the game of football is played.  I know it’s way too early to say that type of thing, but that’s the buzz surrounding him at this point.

5.  Wildcat – Reports out of OTAs are that the Vikings will be implementing the Wildcat Formation, specifically with Percy Harvin, Chester Taylor, and Jaymar Johnson in the lineup.  Don’t get too excited Vikings fans.  First of all, I find it hard to believe that Childress would be willing to abandon his version of a “Kick Ass Offense” for a chance to roll the dice with the latest trend.  He’s too rigid.  Also, if the Vikings truly were going to use the Wild Cat, we probably wouldn’t know about it right now.  Remember, when the Fins pulled out the the Wild Cat against New England it was a complete surprise… as the surprise wore off and the weeks went by, the formation became less of a success.  So, don’t be surprised if the Vikings use it at a couple of carefully chosen spots throughout the season, but don’t expect a complete transformation in the offense.  It will still revolve around handing the ball off to number 28.

Well, there’s my spark-notes version of what I thought of the last month’s news.  So, now that I’m cuaght up, keep checking back for more news and opinions on the most current Vikings issues.
