Sanford Prepares to Battle for Roster Spot

Knowing that he is in for an uphill battle to make the Vikings roster, seventh-round pick Jamarca Sanford quickly signed a four-year NFL contract. Sanford is likely to find himself battling incumbent safeties Husain Abdullah and Eric Framton for two roster spots behind starters Madieu Williams and Tyrell Johnson.

Even without veteran Darren Sharper, there is a good chance the Vikings will keep only four safeties on the roster, which may have played into Sanford signing on the dotted line well before the start of camp.

An early look at the anticipated Vikings depth chart could find a spot on the roster for all five picks. First round wide receiver Percy Harvin and second round right tackle Phil Loadholt could be regulars from Day One on the Vikings offense.

Third round pick Asher Allen is likely battling for the third cornerback spot with Marcus McCauley , Charles Gordon, Benny Sapp and Karl Paymah, and Chester Brinkley is already being penciled in as the top backup at middle linebacker to E.J. Henderson.

The signing of Sanford could be a signal that the Vikings want all their ducks in a row before any perceived “big announcement” coming in the next few days or weeks. The rookie class of the Vikings may not be big in numbers, but all five have a more-than adequate shot of making the final roster.

On a team which had one of the worst special teams coverage groups in the NFL it is possible that outside of Loadholt, they may all contribute to it’s improvement immediately.

It should also be noted that because the Vikings cut three free agents last week, and still have enough cap room to add oh, let’s say a veteran quarterback and a special teams player or two before training camp opens. The return of veteran premier special teams player Heath Farwell should also help to improve a unit that gave up 6 return touchdowns last season.
