Vikings Gab Mailbag

A little while back I introduced the Vikings Gab Mailbag, where readers can submit questions, comments, etc to adam@vikingsgab.com and I will then do my best to respond.  Please, feel free to send in questions.

From Tim:  Are the Vikings still interested in signing Marvin Harrison? I haven’t heard anything about him with the Vikings lately.

Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press started this rumor in his “Don’t Print That” section, which seems to be so reliable that it ought to be named the “My Best Guess” section instead.  Walters tends to be dead wrong far more often than he is a little right.

That being said, Harrison is a talent that any NFL team should be interested in obtaining, even at age 36.  His off the field problems last year, high asking price, recent inability to remain healthy, and receding skills and speed are enough reason to scare many teams away.

Also, the Vikings front office is probably far more concerned with the fact that they are not meeting expectations.  On opening day fans expect to see a dominating run defense (i.e. WilliamsWall), Brett Favre slinging passes in purple, and Antoine Winfield flying around the field and making plays.  As of right now, too many question marks surround these three issues to start bringing in more question marks like Marvin Harrison would be.

In the end, the Vikings are on hold until at least one of the three things mentioned above becomes more clear in terms of cost, risk, and reward.

From Jason:  What is the supplemental Draft, and will the Vikings be involved?

The supplemental draft is coming up this Thursday!  So keep your ears open.  Basically it’s a chance for players who did not declare early entry into the NFL to have the chance to enter the NFL when they find themselves ineligible for college football the following year for whatever reason.  If a team selects a player in a certain round of the supplemental draft, then they give up that pick the following year.

Usually the supplemental draft goes by pretty quietly.  However, in 2007, the Ravens selected Jared Gaither in the fifth round, and he has become a huge contributor on the starting offensive line.

This year, the talk of the draft is Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon.

I do not expect the Vikings to be involved, unless an absolute steal presents itself.  Next year is shaping up to be a fantastic draft class, making 2010 picks all that more valuable to hang on to.  I don’t see them using one on a player that couldn’t even remain eligible for college ball.
