It’s Anyone’s Guess What Lies Ahead for Winfield

While all the talk continues to center around Brett Favre and when he’ll be in town, many are forgetting about the possible disaster that lies ahead with cornerback Antoine Winfield. The CB is still unhappy about not getting the type of deal he wanted, and while he says he won’t hold out, it’s anyone’s guess as to how focused he’ll be for training camp.

“There is way too much time for me or Antoine to even think of anything like,” a holdout, agent Ashanti Webb said. “As of right now, that option has not been discussed at all. The thing that needs to be crystal clear is Antoine is not making any demands or threats or anything like that.”

He does want a new deal though, as he enters the final year of a six-year, $34.8 million deal and is scheduled to make $6 million in 2009. He is 32 years old, which means that the Vikings want to avoid giving him too long of a deal that it will hurt the team, but Winfield has to play fair in order to get something done.

“At this point right now, the Vikings and I have had talks,” Webb said. “There have been discussions. It would be disingenuous or inappropriate for me to say there is any kind of hard (deadline for this to get done). … I’m an optimist. They have not said to me, ‘We’re not doing something.’ I’m not saying, ‘We’re at such grave differences that I’m telling them to forget it.’

“We’re talking. Not talking that much, but there are discussions. You haven’t heard any (verbal) jabs from either one of us. … I think in the realm of these situations this has been hospitable.”

But they are without a deal, and as long as one isn’t done, it’s going to be touch and go with the CB and his true status for the 2009 season.

This should not be as hard as they seem to be making it. They should add three more years to his current deal worth $20 million. He is 32, that would give him security until he is 36. Anymore years than that and he is crazy. He is still a top 5 Dback and should get paid like it, but his age should limit the years on his contract.
