ESPN’s ESPY awards were shown on Sunday evening.  Vikings superstar running back Adrian Peterson was nominated under the “Best NFL Player” category but lost out to Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals.

Peterson led the league in rushing with 1,760 yards.  He also had 10 touchdowns and 125 receiving yards.  His nine fumbles in the season was his least attractive stat line.

By comparison, Fitzgerald led the NFC in recieving yards with 1,431, and put up 12 touchdowns with only one fumble.  Most impressive though was Fitzgerald’s performance when it mattered most.  During the post-season he had 546 yards and seven touchdowns in only four games, including the Super Bowl.

Fitzgerald is currently hosting a whole group of NFL players to work out with him in his home state of Minnesota.  Cris Carter and Jerry Rice have been brought in to teach and mentor the players.  Current Vikings attending are Sidney Rice and Jaymar Johnson.  Cris Carter has recently stated publicly that he sees a ton of potential in Johnson, and that he could possibly be starting (you read that right: STARTING) for the Vikings this season.

While there’s always a ping of disappointment when Peterson doesn’t get the top nod for some award, Fitzgerald is definetly a worthy player.  The fact that he’s turning his offseason into a work-out session and surrounding himself with people that care as much as he does just goes to show why he is now one the elite.
