Trade Market For T-Jack May Have Just Increased

No matter how you spin the recent allegations against Ben Roethlisberger, it is a sad day for football.  Either he’s guilty and yet another of the NFL’s great players is proven to have poor character, or he’s innocent and the young lady making the accusations is yet another example of the dangers that come with the fame of playing the sport at an elite level.  I have to admit that no matter how this thing turns out, I hate that the story even has to exist.

However, I do think that these recent developments are news-worthy on a purely speculative level in relation to the Vikings.

A few weeks back, rumors of Tarvaris Jackson contemplating demanding a trade from the Vikings surfaced across the internet.  Most people scratched their heads at the thought of Tarvaris Jackson having enough clout to demand anything at all, and others scratched their heads trying to think of a team that would be willing to give up anything to obtain his rights.

When I was doing the head scratching one team came to mind as a possible trade partner when considering Jackson.  The Steelers allowed Byron Leftwich to leave the team via free agency this offseason.  This left Mike Tomlin with only a 34 year old option in Charlie Batch and an inexperienced option in Dennis Dixon as the primary backups to Roethlisberger.

Now, I’m not saying that neither of those two players can’t get the job done if Big Ben were to be hurt and/or suspended, but I would also want to be looking at available upgrades if I were the Steelers.  In my mind, Jackson would be an upgrade.

Tomlin served as the Vikings Defensive Coordinator in 2006, and has been witness to Jackson’s potential many times.  Whether or not there is any weight to this speculation will depend greatly on Tomlin’s impression of Jackson during their time on the same team.

I by no means am saying that Roethlisberger will, should, or could be suspended over this matter as it is too early to tell, but if I were the Steelers I’d be looking at my quarterback depth pretty closely on this Tuesday afternoon.
