Sources close to negotiations say that the Vikings might be nearing a contract extension with Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield.

Winfield’s agent, Ashanti Webb, was expected to arrive in Minnesota on Wednesday night to work on negotiations.

Asked in a text message Wednesday how negotiations were going, Webb responded, “On my way to the Twin Cities now.”

Winfield is heading into the final season of a six-year, $34.8 million contract, which was set to pay him $6 million.

Earlier this month, Winfield expressed his frustration in an interview with the Pioneer Press. “I didn’t expect to be in July without a deal,” Winfield said. “Personally, I’m a little disappointed. They consider me a core player, but they’re not showing me that.”

Winfield, who turned 32 last month, led the Vikings in pass breakups with 14 last season, was third in tackles with 96 and tied for the team lead with two interceptions. He also scored two touchdowns — one on a fumble return and another on a blocked field-goal return.

Winfield, was the 23rd pick overall out of Ohio State University in the 1999 draft by the Buffalo Bills. He spent his first five seasons with the Bills before joining the Vikings as a free agent in 2004.
