The Vikings made a roster move today that leaves their nickel spot wide open:
The Vikings’ nickel cornerback battle just got very interesting.
The team waived CB Charles Gordon, who manned the spot well last season before suffering a gruesome, season-ending leg and ankle injury against the Packers. Gordon played in all nine games before the injury, starting two.
The important nickel job is now up for grabs between newly signed Karl Paymah, Marcus McCauley, Benny Sapp and rookie Asher Allen, who just signed a contract over the weekend. Paymah probably has the edge heading into camp over McCauley and Sapp, who have failed in that spot previously in Minnesota, but don’t count out Allen.
Gordon also was a solid punt returner, though rookie Percy Harvin could fill that role. Allen also returned punts in college and could be used there.
