Favre Leaves Vikings With Cap Space

I have to admit, I never wanted Brett Favre to become a Viking.  Even when speculation first started, I made it clear that I thought Favre was a bad idea.  However, I realize that I was in the minority with this opinion.  So, in an effort to make you feel better if you were one of those fans that couldn’t wait to see the future hall-of-famer here is a little bright side to look at.

The Vikings were rumored to be giving Favre a contract in the nieghborhood of $10 million.  This money can now be spent elsewhere if the opportunity arises.  With training camps starting to get underway, the Vikings can now scour the waiver wires for quality potential as teams try to trim their roster down.

Every year a few quality players become camp casualties or even cap casualties, and this year  should be know different.  Think how nice it will be for the Vikings to have this financial freedom to scoop up a quality player or two.

If a high-end defensive tackle becomes available it could help ease the pain of a potential four game suspension for the WilliamsWall.

If one of our starters gets injured during camp, we have the cap space to possibly fill their shoes with a quality veteran.

If another capable quarterback becomes available, the Vikings might be able to add some more competition at that spot.

Maybe a young, speedy running back gets cut that could be signed to eventually replace Chester Taylor.

Maybe the Vikings could extend Chester Taylor’s contract, which would lock him in as a Viking for years to come.

Maybe valuable players like Ray Edwards or Artis Hicks could also see their contracts extended.

I’m not saying all of these will happen, but Favre leaving his financial burden in Mississippi (provided he’s not, you know, lying again) will give the Vikings an insurance policy that can help them go about their regular business by paying football players that actually want to, well, play football.
