TRAINING CAMP: Quarterback Quandry

On Friday, Tarvaris Jackson took the first snaps with the first team.  Rosenfels got his fair share, as well, so don’t read too much into it.

However, what you can read more into is that Jackson looked much sharper than Rosenfels through much of the first day.  He completed sharp passes including a 64-yard touchdown to Sidney Rice.  Jackson, by all accounts, was the first day winner.

Jackson has always practiced well, which has gotten the hopes up of many Vikings fans the last couple of seasons, but seldom has it translated to consistency on Sundays.

Then comes Saturday morning.  There are mixed reports as to how it actually happened, but backup defensive tackle LeTroy Guion made contact with Jackson during a play.  Darrell Bevell said he didn’t see it, and Guion couldn’t explain the event with any more detail than, “It all happened so fast.”

At this point, all we know is that Jackson suffered a Grade I MCL Sprain in his left knee.  Jackson had the same injury in his right knee last pre-season, which caused him to miss about three weeks of practice and two preseason games.

Meanwhile, Sage Rosenfels will get the reps with the first team.

With Jackson having to possibly miss extensive time in training camp, Rosenfels has all of the sudden become the front-runner to win the starting posiition.  Despite being the second-best quarterback through two and a half practices.

Now, it’ll be interesting to see if the Vikings look to bring anybody (no, not THAT anybody) into camp to keep the level of competition high.
