Don’t Fix What Isn’t Broken

This isn’t something that is necessarily worthy of a post of its own, but I wanted to comment on a recent trend:  fixing things that aren’t broken.

First, nfl.com has changed their game centers for the worse.  For those of you who don’t know, the game centers exist in order to provide internet users detailed up-to-the-minute updates during a game.  It is particularly attractive to those who maybe are travelling, live somewhere that a game isn’t being televised, or just for junkies who like to have stats in front of them while a game is on (me).

They have recently changed the NFL website, and I must say it is a downgrade.  Instead of having all the info on one page, there are multiple tabs you need to click in order to be updated.  Also, the “field” view is somewhat more confusing than what it used to be.

Another example of fixing something that isn’t broken has taken place over at Access Vikings.  The previously easy to view and use blog is now condensed and requires multiple clicks to read complete posts, post comments, read comments, and so on.  Now, I understand that the Star Tribune is on the verge of bankruptcy, and this will help generate additional advertising revenues, but the new site is ridiculous.  In fact, I scoured some of the most recent posts and some of the people that have left dozens of comments every day for years and years (the regulars) are now nowhere to be seen.

I know that these decisions are not the fault of the writers, but rather that of corporate big wigs, but it is too bad that their great writing and Vikings coverage is overshadowed by annoying obstacles that prevent readers from, you know, reading.

The Vikings recently gave their official website a huge makeover, but I must say, that was a much needed change and served to allow their users much easier navigation and access.  The Vikings site needed to be changed, these other two were fine just the way they were, in my opinion.

Don’t have much to say about besides that I’m bummed these changes have occurred.  Check them out and let me know what you think.

Just want to say that I agree with your opinion here. I have been reading the AV since Favre was released by the Jets and was positive we would sign him from that day forward.

All the “regulars” are still fighting the resistance against the change of the AV. Led by B. Grant, they call it OAVBR, Original Access Vikings Blog Resistance. They are looking for new recruits and original “regulars” such as you, if you be akviking.

You can find the group at the last posting of the “original” AV. You can find them by clicking on the Access Viking Archive link when you read one of Judd or Chips blog posts. Coach and the rest of the gang would love to for you to join the resistance. They are also looking for a possible alternative if the archive blog gets shut down. Not likely for some time, but I would think the page may get pretty large and may get to be slow loading.

Just thought I would let you know the current situation ak. I like your site, especially your links to other blogs. There also is one called Purple Thoughts. You may want to check it out. Have a good day/evening.

    Dana,

You’ve outed my AV moniker, it is true 😉

Well, I don’t want to be a scavenger and take advantage of a poor hand that has been dealt to Judd and Chip, but if you ever want to hang out here everyone from AV is more than welcome to.

Judd and Chip do a freaking great job, and I feel bad that their AV has been shredded the way it has. But if you folks stop in here, I’ll make sure to keep everone updated on all things Vikings.

Also, I’ll make sure to check out purple thoughts and get them added to our blogroll.

    Thanks for stopping in!

    Morning AK,

I’m not sure if you get alerts to posts in your emails or not, but I’m going to come back to this old one anyway.

JFYI …… I didn’t out your moniker. Fran the Man did while I was lurking at the OAVBR. He suggested the group check out this site, plus you posted a comment on the “faux” AV suggesting this sight for regulars that weren’t happy with that new website.

I finally joined the resistance myself, and am going by the name olderthandirt, which I shall also use on your site here.

Have a good day. I am enjoying your posts.

    Dana,

No worries, I was just joking about outing me 🙂 I made my Vikings Gab gig pretty well known to my friends at AV back when I first started.

Glad you’re enjoying thr posts, and I hope you join us for the live blog!
