So If You HAD To Choose

Let’s face it, if the Lions upset the Vikings this Sunday then that would hurt two-fold.  The first pain would come in realizing we just lost a game that we were supposed to win by six thousand points.  The second pain would come from realizing that the Lions just exposed our weakest links and that other teams will continue to do so.

So, let’s explore the “weakest link” aspect for a moment.  Who is it, and why?  Well, here’s my assessment.

On offense I think the weakest link has got to be Bryant McKinnie.  I’m not saying he’s the worst player of the eleven starters, but at his position he is not as solid as we would all like.  McKinnie is a stellar run blocker but lacks the quickness and agility to do a truly great job of pass protection.

How great would it be if the Vikings had a left tackle that could consistently perform like the Browns Joe Thomas did last week against Jared Allen?  Then the Vikings wouldn’t be forced to line Jim Kleinsasser up next to him to help, and they could put an extra playmaker on the field like Darius Reynaud or Chester Taylor.  McKinnie is also penalty prone.

That being siad, McKinnie is just a notch or two below Pro Bowl level, so him being the weakest link is not the worst thing in the world for our offense.

On defense, I have to pick on the young safety, Tyrell Johnson.  He shows promise as a long term solution, but has taken enough bad angles, missed a few tackles, and been a step too late in coverage at least once or twice in every game.  Plus, he has not produced much in the way of big plays.

Johnson seems to still be developing, and Fraziers strict assignments will prevent him from being singled out too much, but improved play would go a long ways towards making this defense one without any serious doubts.

So what do you all think?  Should I have included Phil Loadholt, the special teams, or someone else?  Feel free to chime in!

I would agree with you about Tyrell, he does miss just often enough. At the beginning of the year, I would have say Ray Edwards, but he has played very well.

On offense, I would say we have 3 spots that all tie as weakest link:
Sully, Mt. McKinnie and our starting WRs. I actually really like all of these players, but since I HAD to choose… Sully will get better, we should probably all be happy if McKinnie keeps playing the way he has, and Berrian and Rice are not as productive as they could be with the talent God has given them. If these three things all took a step forward, our offense would be stellar.
