Very, Very, Very Early Mock Draft
So I had a reader request that I take a stab at doing a 2010 mock draft. This is a fun exercise but, after reading it for little more than entertainment value, you can pretty much discard it as pure B.S.
There are a few reasons for this.
First, the 2009 season is only half over meaning the draft order will change greatly between now and the draft.
Second, team needs are not fully clear at the moment. Teams doing great could see a mid-season collapse while miserable teams may go on a second-half run. Also, major injuries will surely happen in the next 2 months. Re-signing free agents and also the free agency period will solidify a team’s needs.
Third, an individual prospects draft stock is likely to fall and rise a great deal between now and the draft. The end of the season, championship games, the Senior Bowl, arrests, and pro days will all be watched closely between now and April.
Fourth, this offseason is gearing up to be one with some major coaching changes. New coaches often mean an overhaul of the roster, which could completely change everything. The NFL execs that are safe to be in their seats next season have barely begun to think about the offseason, so it is a silly fact that we have.
Fifth, the status of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players and the league could play a major factor in a team’s needs. Most notably, many players slated to become unrestricted free agents may actually become restricted free agents, making it easier for teams to retain them.
So, setting all that aside, let’s take a look at what I came up with. The order is based off of the current NFL standings, with ties being decided by nothing more than alphabetic order.
Also, I made one change to the order… because we all know the Vikes will win the Super Bowl. It’s practically a done deal (kidding).
1.) Browns – Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame: Mangini, or the Browns new coach, decides to choose his own quarterback to rebuild around.
2.) Lions – Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State: The Lions are capable of having a solid offense if they could only protect their billion dollar quarterback and clear a path for their shining young running back.
3.) Chiefs – Eric Berry, S, Tennessee: The Chiefs desperately need help on pass defense, and Eric Berry happens to be the best player in this draft class. No brainer if they can get their hands on him.
4.) Rams – Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma: The Rams are a mess and have a ton of needs. Starting at quarterback would give them hopes of a Falcons-like turn around.
5.) Buccaneers – Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska: Great value in a position of need. The Bucs have talent at most of the highly valued positions, so rebuilding from the trenches would be a great start.
6.) Raiders – Tim Tebow, QB, Florida: Al Davis likes the big names, despite the wisdom (or lack thereof) of drafting some of these guys. JaMarcus Russell is absolutely terrible.
7.) Titans – Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma: Time to replace Hayneworth with a long term solution. McCoy will help solidify a struggling defense.
8.) Redskins – Jake Locker, QB, Washington: Jason Campbell will probably be allowed to walk after this season. Locker will provide the Skins with a young quarterback to help them get back on track.
9.) Bills – Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland: Trading Jason Peters did not work out well in the short term, as the Bills line is a mess. Campbell would be a steal at this point.
10.) 49ers – Joe Haden, CB, Florida: The Niners have been demoting Nate Clements of late, which is not a good sign for a guy who chews up a ton of cap space. The Niners may try to replace him ASAP.
11.) Dolphins – Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss: The pass rush has been a surprising disappointment for the Fins, and Jason Taylor may only be around for a very limited time. He’d be a great tutor for a young, promising rookie talent.
12.) 49ers – Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa: The Niners don’t get the quarterback they covet in this mock draft, so they focus on protecting the ones they are stuck with. Snyder and Pashos have proven they are not the answer at the tackle position.
13.) Seahawks – Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma: It is hard to tell where the Hawks need help, as they have been in injury hell for two seasons now. I think they start by replacing the ageing, injury prone offensive line.
14.) Ravens – Damian Williams, WR, USC: Another speedy target for Joe Flacco to utilize on game day. The Ravens have a few needs on defense, but surely want to make sure they set up their young quarterback for success.
15.) Broncos – Taylor Mays, S, USC: The Broncos don’t have a ton of needs, so they pick up a prospect with a ton of upside that needs to be tutored by an experienced, talented, hall-of-fame veteran. Oh, hey, they have Brian Dawkins on their roster!
16.) Packers – Charles Brown, OT, USC: If the Packers don’t upgrade their line then people will be fired on the spot. Point Blank. Period. Plus Aaron Rodgers would probably meet an untimely demise.
17.) Jaguars – Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida: The Jaguars desperately need to put butts in seats, and plan on doing so by bringing in an in-state hero. Unfortunately, Tim Tebow isn’t available so they reach for Spikes.
18.) Jets – Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State: The Braylon Edwards trade worked out big time… for a week. The Jets need to surround their new Sanchize quarterback with as much talent as possible.
19.) Texans – Jahvid Best, RB, California: The Texans desperately need help in the secondary, but they have a chance to finally solidify their running back woes once and for all by drafting the best available player.
20.) Giants – Rolando Mcclain, ILB, Alabama: Antonio Peirce is having an off year, and strangely the Giants defense seems to be fading quickly. McClain can provide a spark, and also a young guy to build around.
21.) Cardinals – Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma: This provides the Cards with even more firepower in the passing game and some improved blocking on the line.
22.) Falcons – Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama: The Falcons have some true promise on offense, so now it is time to complete the transformation by infusing the defense with young talent. Cody is not an every down player, but should effectively help shut down an opponent’s attempt to run the ball.
23.) Eagles – Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma: The Eagles linebackers have been terrible for the most part this season. An upgrade would be very well received by the fans.
24.) Chargers – C.J. Spiller, Running Back, Clemson: The Chargers fans are used to a solid running game and have expectations set pretty high. With Tomlinson even admitting he’s declining and with Sproles not being an every down back (if they can afford to keep him) the Chargers need to address the running back spot as early as possible.
25.) Bengals – Earl Thomas, FS, Texas: The Bengals are surprisingly solid at most positions. They’d love to find a complimentary back to Benson, but with the top two running backs off the board they try to keep a good thing going by continuing to improve on defense.
26.) Cowboys – Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers: Flozell has been not so great this year, and the ‘Boys are stuck on Romo for another year. Improving the line will be the best way to make him successful as the rest of the offense is pretty darn solid.
27.) Seahawks – Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas: Matt and Seneca have provided the Seattle fans with a solid duo of quarterbacks for a long time, but that time is coming to an end. Time to bring in a guy that can give some hope to the future.
28.) Patriots – Arthur Jones, DE/DT, Syracuse: The Patriots love hardnosed players with versatility. Arthur Jones provides the Pats with a solid contributor on a defense that could use some help.
29.) Steelers – Morgan Burnett, FS, Georgia Tech: Ryan Clark and Tyrone Carter are both potentially leaving in free agency. Putting a young stud across from Troy would help ensure stability on what is currently a great defense.
30.) Saints – Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia: The Saints defense appears like a one year mirage to me, and they need to start getting some quality youth in order to continue their dominating ways.
31.) Colts – Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech: Bill Polian always seems to be a step ahead of everyone else. He knows that he is one year away from losing some of his best defensive ends, so addressing the need a year early is just one more example of why the Colts are consistently one of the best teams in the NFL.
32.) Vikings – Trevard Lindley, CB, Kentucky: No quarterbacks or safeties worth reaching for here, I have the Vikings taking a top corner to try and solidify a secondary that can use help. But this is exactly why I think they may consider trading up for a top quarterback. Lindley may be able to allow Winfield to move into the nickel position sooner rather than later. Some other considerations here are Carlos Dunlap (DE), Sean Weatherspoon (OLB), Donovan Warren (CB), Jason Fox (OT), Jevan Snead (QB), and Marvin Austin (DT).
So there you have it folks. I will make sure to update this from time to time, so check back for more draft talk.

Hey Adam you just called me a reader. I thought we were like brothers man. Just kidden. Thanks for doing this. Great job, as always. Very interesting and fun read. I see you even got one of my Hawkeyes at #12, could be a couple more though. ya really think Al Davis will give up on Russell? I agree he should. If you plug the Vikes in at say 24 what do you think. God forbid.

Thought it was you that requested it Johnny… but couldn’t remember for sure… and was too lazy to go back and look
If the Vikes were moved forward a few spots I think they’d love to snag a guy like Earl Thomas.

Whats his story? I see he’s a FS from Texas a definite need for us.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
He’s second on my list of safeties: http://www.vikingsgab.com/2009/11/06/prospects-to-watch-safeties/
Searching youtube will turn up a few highlights, but there will be more film available as we get closer.

that’s what I’m here for

Adam,
I just can’t imagine us NOT doing all we can to pick up a QB for the future.
I love your optimism on where you have us picking, by the way.
We most asuridly need secondary help but that can be addressed in FA or trades much easier than A QB.
I keep waiting for us to blow out a team early, so we can see if Jackson has got anything or not but the opportunities just haven’t been there.
Maybe this weekend. . .
Nice mock, by the way.

Yeah, I think the Vikes may try to keep t-Jack around, we’ll see. If the Collective Bargaining Agreement stays the way it is, then I believe T-Jack will be a restricted free agent, making it easier to keep him… less money and less committment.
The Vikes will need to trade up to get one of the truly great prospects in this draft, I think. But they also could pick up one or two very solid prospects in rounds 2 & 3
Thanks for the props!

Geez, I scrolled thru your mock list 3 times until it hit me.
The Bears DON’T have a 1st rounder!
That Cutler trade was great!!!
November 11th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Yes, Cutler will be good for the Bears, but they are a team that needs improvement and has limited means of doing so.

Fran good to see you here. I must say I didnt notice that Fran, thanks. Adam is very good at replying back to you if you have any thoughts. I wish the old gang would drop by and get something going here.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
bigjohn, I put another plug over at the real AV for Viking Gab this morning. Hopefuly, some of the guys will show up.
November 11th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Appreciate the help guys, and as always it is great to see you Fran.
November 11th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Is Clausen alright after that hit he took at the goal-line?
I would like to see this guy in Purple and Gold (capitalized to show I am talkig about THE purple and gold). What are the odds he ends up stinking up the place like Brady Quinn?
November 11th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Clausen should be alright. I think Brady Quinn was never given a fair shot to prove anything… and if he becomes available in free agency then the Vikes should consider him. Besides being on a lousy team, he was never given the chance (from injury and coaching decisions) to have any continuity. I think he could still turn out to be a solid QB in a different scenario.
The Vikes would have to give up a lot to draft Clausen… like 2 first rounders, a second rounder, and a zillion dollars in future cap space. I don’t see it happening.
In the right situation, Clausen will be successful. He’s a very refined quarterback, whereas Quinn has a lot of question marks coming out of college. Clausen’s game is pretty polished.

Hey Fran, do you suppose we could talk Adam into adding to the name of his site to something like vikingsgab-real Av blog? Some of the guys might feel more at home that way. How about it Adam?
November 11th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Ha Ha, it’s isn’t “my site” so I don’t get to make those calls… but I also wouldn’t want to take anything away from our friends at the strib.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Adam I think pretty much everybody has already bailed on the Strib anyway. Very, very few of the real AV crowd go to the strib other than to the archives. I could be wrong but dont think so. Most of us voiced our concerns about the new AV but the bosses didnt listen.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
I do my best to keep things updated and interesting (as do the other great writers on this site), but there are a lot of great sites out there (see our blogroll) that provide competition. But the content will always be here, and we love hearing people’s comments and questions.
As long as I am here, I’ll strive to make it the best Vikings site on the net.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Thats why I love your site Adam. Ive checked out your blogroll, and yes there’s some good sites there but I always come back here so I say your site is the best

Adam- Nice mock, curious about your thoughts on trading the 1st rounder if we are at the bottom for picks this year and possible 1st rounder next year? I don’t think we have a shot at an “elite” QB in the draft this year, but in the late 2nd or 3rd round we could still get a solid QB that might turn out to be a stud.
November 12th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Hey Pat! Good to hear from you!
I think a lot will depend on how the quarterback position plays out prior to the draft. If Favre retires. If T-Jack is retained. If someone else is picked up. How confident the coaches are giving the reigns to Sage for a year.
Keep in mind that the Vikings will probably get two fifth round compensations picks for letting Sharper and Birk go in free agency (compensation picks can be no higher than a 5th rounder for players over the age of 30). These picks can’t be traded, so if the Vikes decided to swing a huge trade to move up then there would still be the potential to infuse the team with youth.
For instance, if they traded their first, second, and fourth rounder to move all the way up and snag Clausen… they would still have six draft picks later on to help fill the few remaining holes they would have on this roster.
In short, I really think they need to trade up for a Clausen/Bradford/Locker type of guy. I think the Tebow risk would be worth it where they end up drafting, but not worth trading up for.
November 12th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Excellent point about the 2 extra 5th rounder’s Adam. I didn’t realize we had those.
To me, it’s a no brainer now. If Jackson still doesn’t look like our future and Rosenfels still looks like a #3, trade whatever it takes to move up and get Clausen.
In regards to Jackson, I’m still not convinced he’s a bust. We all know he was thrown to the wolves way too early and that probably had a part in his lack of play.
Now, the guy gets what he should have gotten for his first two years; The chance to sit behind one of the best and learn.
Who knows, if we could get some good looks out of him this year, maybe we aren’t looking for a QB next year.
November 13th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
The 2 5th rounders aren’t a done deal… that’s just a guess. The NFL keeps their compensation pick formula under pretty tight wraps. They should get two picks of SOME sort out of Birk and Sharper.
November 13th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Tebow at number 6 AKs? Fred thinks his old pal has been hitting the hooka pipe. It’s the Raiders so you might be right, what with Al Davis and all. Fred hopes on top of hope that the Purple doesn’t waste a #1 on Tebow, even when he falls to pick 32. Fred knows…proven winner…blah blah blah. He seems like a good guy and great college QB but if he thinks he can run as much in the pros as he does in college his career will be a very short one. His throwing delivery is SO slow the pro corners will have a field day with him. Fred predicts Tim won’t go until the end of the second round.
Fred doesn’t think the Vikes solve their QB issue in the draft next year. We’d have to give away too much to move up to a top 5 level to get a good prospect.
Fred thinks Donovan McKnucklehead will be with us next year. Fred hates to even think about it. Fred is still trying to stop cheering when Farve gets sacked, and Fred hates Donovan more. It’s hard to break a 15 year habit, sorry folks.
November 13th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Freds, I disagree on Tebow. His throwing windup makes him look like he should pitching instead of throwing a football, but that is coachable.
I think he is one of the most coachable quarterbacks to come out in a long long time. The fact that he uses his feet to make PASS plays almost as often as he runs with it puts him a giant step ahead of most mobile qb prospects in the last decade.
McNabb would surely not be my first choice. I’m actually pulling for a roster that looks like this:
Rosenfels, Brady Quinn, 2nd round draft pick.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
Adam I think Freds is worried that he wont be able to cover his receiver while Tebow is QBing. Thus he will lose his shutdown corner status.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Interesting take Johhnny, if that’s the case then I agree… Tebow will be a joke.
(don’t want to tarnish Freds reputation as an elite corner in the NFL.)
November 13th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Ya Adam Freds takes that elite corner thing very seriously.

Such a good post had to give it officially 30 comments. Thanks Adam
