Much agreed on everything you said Bretg. The secondary is a huge liability right now. The strength of this free agent class, however, is going to be in the front seven and at running back.

Funny how many defensive backs you listed. Unfortunately the Vikings have struggled mightily in the secondary, and it's something that MUST be improved before we go anywhere.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Vikings were to meet the Saints in the playoffs (which could very well happen), Drew Brees would tear us up. The tackling in the secondary is just awful, and it seems like there are always holes that even the worst QBs can find. How does Flacco put up career numbers against us, and then lay an egg against Cincy. Something isn't right there.

The inability to close out games has hurt the Vikings this year. They are lucky to be 7-1, and the secondary MUST improve. If we're up big, opponents are forced to rely on the pass. Granted, they played well enough against the Steelers, and the Vikes should have won that game (we all know they were driving for the win with a minute to go :) ). But that is our obvious weakness.

Edwards currently isn't chewing up much space, as he's in the final year of his rookie contract. Mid-round picks don't bank too much money. That could change this year, though, as Edwards is slated to be a free agent... possibly restricted though.

Kampman would be spendy, but the upgrade may be worth it, especially if big pat decides to retire.

Adam, how much is Ray Edwards contract? Kampman would be a huge upgrade. Just wondering the difference

I think Kampman would be pricey, but not too bad considering the possibility of Julius Peppers, Demarcus Ware, and Kyle Vanden Bosch also being possible free agents.

Lost, do you think Kampman would be a high priced bust? He's the only one of the bunch I would consider.

This poaching the Pack leads to a reflection of how the Vike roster was put together the last three years.

The hit-and-miss drafts of the Tice era still resulted in some excellent picks. Vike really turned the corner with the selection of Adrian Peterson.

Most people would say the Vike FA acquisitions were the catalyst. You can't argue that Favre, Chester Taylor, Bernard Berrian, Hutchison, M. and P. Willlams, Winfield haven't had a huge impact. A less appreciated part of the roster process, hoewever, was Vike ability to avoid the expensive FA bust.

Had Vike decided to shell out for Shaun Alexander in '06 and perhaps Houshmandzadeh last year the club might have struggled. FA is a crapshoot of sorts. So far we've been lucky not to have reached for the wrong number
