When Winfield Returns, Who Doesn’t?
Antoine Winfield was very close to returning against the Seahawks, even though he was listed as doubtful. It is widely expected that Winfield will play this week against the Bears, or the following week against the Cardinals.
It will be great to have him back in the starting lineup, but it begs the question as to who will sit. Before Winfield was injured, rookie Asher Allen was inactive for every game. One has to wonder if things have changed since then, and which cornerback will take the backseat.
Let’s look at the stats of Benny Sapp, Karl Paymah, and Asher Allen for the year.
Sapp has played in every game so far, and is credited with four starts. In that time, he has garnered 24 solo tackles, three passes defended, and one forced fumble. Sapp, known as a risk taker who gets burned, has improved this aspect of his play since one year ago. Sapp is seldom seen out of position and has done a decent job sticking to his assignments. He is also thought to be a very solid nickel back.
Paymah has also played in all 10 games, and is credited with two starts. He has produced 21 solo tackles, one pass defended, and a forced fumble. Outside of jumping into the starting lineup against Baltimore, Paymah has been a serviceable corner. He was excelled mainly on special teams.
Allen has only played in four games, starting none. What is interesting however, is that even with such limited time, Allen has produced more big plays than either of the two guys listed above (look in the comments, my buddy G.P. will holler about how great “Double A” is within 12 hours, I promise it). He has nine solo tackles, one sack, one pass defended, one interception, and one forced fumble. His biggest knock is that at least once in each of the four games, Allen has missed badly on a tackle that should’ve been made.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Vikings will do when Winfield comes back.
My opinion (thanks for asking!) is that the Vikings should sit Karl Paymah. Benny Sapp is a very solid nickel back, where Paymah doesn’t fit in. Asher Allen has out-produced Paymah, despite his lack of playing time. Paymah might be missed most on special teams, but if the Vikings continue to activate five safeties, then his void can easily be filled by Jamarca Sanford who stripped the football on a kick return last week and Husain Abdullah who is equally as good on special teams and can also fill in at cornerback if needed.
One big knock against this Vikings team is that they should have far more interceptions than their current total, especially given the pressure the defensive line is constantly placing on opposing quarterbacks. Winfield coming back should help produce more turnovers, but Asher Allen has shown ability to produce a turnover.
So, it is the opinion of this blogger that Paymah should sit as it is time to look towards the future and see if Asher Allen can bring a spark to this secondary.

I agree Adam. Paymah sits.
They need to be sure Antoine is 100%, need him for playoffs.
Throwbacks this week! Those should be permanent!

Dang Adam I have to agree with you. In the earlier comment you suggested that Paymah would likely be gone in the offseason anyway. Asher has alot more upside than Paymah so lets give him some playing time.

Good call…I agree also.

Adam,
Ditto, Like Benny Sapp and Asher Allen needs the playing time to keep growing and getting better, I’m with c.carterhof, Make sure A.Winfield is totally 100% I hope they hold him out.
Do want to see him in the lineup against the Cards…

Wow, everyone agrees on something I’ve written? Is this some sort of cruel joke???

Well my dear Sherlock I must say I agree with your surmmation of who should sit out. Trust me when I say that Double A is destined to be a great asset to the Vikings. It is my true belief that Asher Allen deserves to play and is well on his way to making a lasting impression and a big impact. I also want to extend a big thanks to both you and those that agree with your post. Thanks guys! So, happy to know that their are possible Asher Fans in the making. It really excites me to see that people are noticing his athletic prowess. The more he plays the more he stands to find his footing and start stunting on people like never before…Ya’ll ain’t seen nothing yet!

Wow, I suppose my 12 hour prediction wasn’t giving you enough credit, eh?
For those of you who missed it (probably all of you) G.P. took exception to my original draft grade of Asher Allen… which was a B-. He also disliked my assessment of Allen, when I said that Allen would not be put any higher than dime back this season and would never be as good as Antoine Winfield.
While I know G.P. has some sort of Georgia ties (G.P. Burdell is a fictional character that is used to play all sorts of tricks around the Georgia Tech campus) I am not sure exactly what they are.
Perhaps he is Asher’s agent, given the amount of enthusiasm he has for Asher Allen… haha. Or maybe his mom.
Either way, we started out at each other’s throats debating the choice to draft Allen, but now I enjoy G.P.’s posts as much as anyones. And if anything, he has turned me into a huge Asher Allen supporter.
Though, he never took me up on the offer to write a guest article on the matter.
Maybe me and TrueVikingsFan will one day become friends as well…

For some reason, Adam, I dont think your last sentence will happen. I know for a fact that I wont become freinds with old True any time soon. I gotta say I’m with GP on Allen, sorry Adam we cant agree all the time.
November 24th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
That is fine, but so far I AM right on this.
Asher has never been higher than dime back (and that only because Antoine was injured) and so far he’s not as good as Antoine
As it goes anytime I am unsure about a Vikings player… I hope I’m eating crow very soon.

bigjohnny84 you are in fact a wise and highly intelligent man! Warwas, dude give the kid time. It is after all Allen’s first season. He’s still in the process of getting his cleats dirty and finding his way. ‘Toine is a veteran with numerous plays under his belt. Asher is not. I know you’re smart enough to distinguish the difference. Allen will climb the ranks soon enough. I don’t, won’t, and refuse to doubt his ability. Time will reveal all. Once again thanks bigjohnny84!

You are sure welcome GP. Hope you post more often. And any friend of Adams is a friend of mine [Truevikingsfan] excluded.

Oh Warwas, I must say I find your determination to uncover my origins and why my enthusiasm for Allen is so extreme rather endearing. No one could ever call you a quiter. I’d love to write a guest article as I love football and the Vikings are a great team with great talent. Just to clarify I am not Asher A’s mom. As I’m certain her enthusiasm for Allen goes far beyond my own. I meant to write a glowing article about Harvin before the hype began. I knew it would and therefore was not concerned. Harvin has a well earned and deserved reputation as a Terminator as any avid fan of SEC football fan knows.
I support Allen because he is a talented and skilled athlete that loves the art of football. I will say that my frevor began in late 05′. Allen it seems most often gets over shadowed or overlooked by sports commentators and analysts alike. Still, he goes out and plays with excitement and heart regardless of the haters and manages to prove them wrong. He just wants to play the game and play it well. I respect that and that coupled with Asher Allen’s athletic ability has made me a hardcore Allen Fan. He might be little but he sure is mighty and he’ll be first to let you know that on the field. Gotta love the kid!
November 24th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Hmm… so you don’t deny being his agent, eh?
November 24th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Gee Adam now you say he’s not as good as Winnfield, no kidden, but very few are as good as Winni. I guess time will tell but for now I hope you are eating the crow and GP is right.

By the way, where the heck is Freds? Oh I bet he’s on a date with that Chelsea girl from the live-chat. He’s probably at the Seattle airport right now telling her about the advantages of drinking Colt 45’s. Hope Freds doesn’t take advantage of her with the smooth talk and the 45’s. I hope Freds tells me all about it when he gets back.

Wow Adam,
Your getting tag teamed !!! lol
November 24th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Adam,
Lemon pepper seasons the crow, Hey it should at least taste good…
November 24th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Charlie lets just hope GP and I are right and Adam is wrong (for the good of the team). Les Frazier saw something in this kid too.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
One of my key points exactly…Frazier isn’t stupid and saw potential. I must say bigjohnny84 I like the way you think!
November 24th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
GP I think you are a very wise man also. I just see something in Allen that’s special. Adam will come around soon. Although we’ve been dragging him along kicking and screaming about the Favre thing.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
haha, you guys are too funny.
Love the discussion, and i look forward to being proved wrong by Asher becomming more than a “B-” type player and a better corner than ‘Toine.
November 24th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Adam Isure hope you are wrong. Dont like the taste of crow even with pepper.
November 25th, 2009 at 12:16 am
bigjohnny84 You’re so on point it scares me! I’m glad you recognize that your You’re so right and so on point it scares me bigjohnny84! Double A is special. I think we might just be wearing Warwas down! Can’t knock Warwas though after all it was his post that began The Great Asher A Debate of 2009. Yes I’ve taken it upon myself to formally name our conversation. Thanks for the compliment. I share similar sentiments towards you. All conversation is good conversation . As long as people are talking especially people with an eye for talent … Asher A is doing okay. Anyone can jump on an obvious bandwagon but to spot a good thing and watch it grow into a great thing takes skill and dedication. Double A is a good thing! Warwas my friend you are good at playing the role of Devil’s Advocate. I know deep down inside you love it when Asher Allen puts the stomp on someone!
November 25th, 2009 at 1:41 am
Of course I love it when Asher does something well, after all I am a Vikings fan.
Even I, perhaps the most umapproving person of the Brett Favre acquisition is capable of cheering for Favre on Sundays. And I don’t have a decades-worth of hatred towards Asher Allen. Just slightly questioned him as our 3rd rounder. That’s all.
Do not mistake my analysis of the draft choice as hoping he does poorly (although, I still don’t get how a B- is so bad).
And no wearing down needed, G.P. I cheer for the kid, and thanks to you keep a special eye on him. He needs to improve his tackling, but other than that he has impressed me thus far… hence the article written above.

Last comment sent from my phone that is currently having issues sorry for the typo but all the key elements are there!
November 25th, 2009 at 1:42 am
It’s a normal thing around here… typos that is. I’m the worst of them all, I think I actually used the word “proved” wrong in a comment up above… and Johnny didn’t even call me on it
November 25th, 2009 at 4:53 am
Yup. Sit Paymah. Keep Asher Allen in for his bigtime hitting.
Note: I would have cut Paymah outright after Raven game but he has rebounded
November 25th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
The added attention on Double A is much appreciated Warwas! Thanks again to all those that have faith in the kid and his abilities! A B- is not a bad grade so to speak. It was merely that in the article you hinted that Allen didn’t have the potential to rise above the initial grade. Which is what originally struck me as cause for concern and a geniune crusade to make you think other wise. I can see that my efforts have been rewarded. I’d like to think that most everyone is just a play or perhaps word away from seeing how valuable the kid is. I really do like the Vikes and think that Allen is fortunate to play for a team with such a loyal and intelligent fan base. SKOL VIKES!
November 25th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Just a thought…I realize that Karl Paymah is often times quite the sinking spectacle but he’s trying and his job is tough. He’s managed to stay in the game and for that I applaud him. Paymah is just not as agile or as aggressive as a great corner should be. He’s tried to go out and rep for the Vikes as best he can. I’m sure he wants to make the Vikings Nation proud and have their respect in return. Football is cut throat. I’m not saying that because he puts fourth effort he should play. Only that he wants to make it just as much as the next guy and its not any easier when people are on your butt. Myself included, I’ve had my fair share of Paymah doubts and zealous critiques. As, I would much rather see Allen play. However, Paymah is still a Viking and at the end of the day the Vikes are a team.

Well stated, sir.
