I tend to get wrapped up in football and negative off-the-field actions by Vikings players. For some reason, us bloggers forget that fans like to hear good things about their players as well.
For example, I recently neglected to mention that Madieu Williams made a hefty donation to his Alma Mater during the bye week… a donation that even floored Antoine Winfield.
“Two million dollars?” Winfield asked amazed. “Wow. I thought he was nice. Generous, too.”
The donation will go a long ways towards establishing the new Center for Global Health Initiatives, which will focus on Williams’ country of birth, Sierra Leone.
More recently, Adrian Peterson and Tarvaris Jackson took time to help out underprivileged families in Minneapolis. Bryant McKinnie and Chester Taylor also stopped by to sign autographs and hand out vouchers for free turkeys at a local grocery store.
“I feel like it’s a big responsibility,” Peterson said. “Coming from a small town, and being able to live a dream now, it was always in my heart to be able to give back if I was put in that position. That’s what I’m doing now.”
Peterson will be hosting upwards of two dozen family members on Thanksgiving, and Tarvaris Jackson plans on cooking dinner for Sidney Rice since they both will be away from family during the holiday.
“I’m a pretty good cook. Call me Iron Chef Jackson. That’s me,” said Jackson.
So, here is the part where I say thanks to the 2009 Vikings for making me proud to be a Vikings fan. Giving back is such an important part of being a role model, and these gentlemen are living up to those expectations.
That being said, if Williams misses a tackle, Tarvaris throws a jump pass, Adrian fumbles, and/or McKinnie goes anywhere near a boat I will still be all over their asses come Monday.
