Sorry, I am not sure how I let this one slip by me, but this is old news that I am now just bringing up because I, well… somehow let this one slip by me.

Jared Allen recently restructured a portion of his contract.  The move allowed him to collect $4 million worth of an $8 million bonus that was due to be paid out in March of 2010.  The move chews up $4 million in space for the 2009 cap (anyone besides me flabbergasted that we had that much left?) and frees up $4 million for next year’s cap.

The curious part about this move is that most NFL analysts predict an uncapped year in 2010 due to the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the Player’s Union.  As PFT points out, perhaps the Vikings are a little more optimistic than everyone else is that a deal will get done and a cap will be in place next year.

However, any time Rob Brzezinski makes a move I will not question it.  That guy is a genious when it comes to NFL finances and cap management.  He is the primary reason that the Vikings can afford to field a team with so many elite players on it.

So congrats to Jared on getting $4 million a few months early.

My bonus for being a Vikings Gab writer is way more than that, though.

But I don’t think they’ll give it to me early.

I’m scheduled to receive it in March of 2082.
