Irresponsible Speculation: Defensive End

Okay, I have to say right off the top that I have done zero research to support this theory.  And theory is the key word there, because that is exactly what this is.

Something has been nagging at me for a few weeks now.  A while back, the Vikings opted to give Jared Allen a re-structured contract that basically moved $4 million from being paid out next year to being paid out this year.  I couldn’t figure out why the heck they did this for the life of me.

Almost everyone who follows the dealings between the Player’s Union and the NFL are fairly sure that 2010 will be an uncapped year, so it isn’t like the Vikings were needing to save cap space, right?  And I highly doubt Jared Allen was simply able to just ask for a $4 million advance becuase he couldn’t keep up with his student loans from his days at the Culinary Institute.

So, why transfer the $4 million?  Here’s an idea.

The franchise tag can be placed on a player but will cost the team applying the tag an average of the five top paid player’s at that position during the previous season.

So with a crop of defensive ends set to hit free agency that include Aaron Kampman, Kyle Vanden Bosch, and Julius Peppers are the Vikings simply trying to drive up the price of tagging these players in an effort to discourage other teams from doing so?  And are they targeting one of them to add to Jared Allen’s defensive line?

Again, just a theory… but it is better than any other reason I can think of for giving Jared Allen $4 million early.
