I’m not big into the draft. I mean, I love to watch it – but I’m no good at analyzing it and making predictions.

That being said, I AM surprised to see the QB move in the second round. I would even be weary of a QB at 32 in the first round (unless some good ones got passed up). I think, and correct me if I’m wrong (I probably am), but I would wait to draft a QB until we have a bad year and can get a better pick.

I do like the tackle choice though for this year. We need to build our line back up to improve our running game. I’m not convinced its anything AP has stopped doing. There just hasn’t been nearly as many holes this year…

    SKOL!

The Vikings are about to enter a world of hurt at the QB position (post-Favre) and they need as many options as possible. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them trade up for Clausen/Bradford or reach on Tony Pike at the end of round 1.

  2. Tomb... says:

Charlie Brown? He’s a clown. Yeah Charlie Brown, he’s a clown.

Canfield? Reminds me of a poor man’s Booty. Then again, we do need to make sure we have a QB on the practice squad for years to come.

  3. Fragile Freds says:

Cody from Bama will not last past Pittsburg in round 1 and certainly not past the Purple if he falls that far. If the Lion get both the first and second round picks you have listed they will be in very very good shape.

    • Adam Warwas says:

I think we’re gonna see Cody’s stock drop over the next couple of month’s Freds, especially given the relative depth at DT this year. Steelers are looking to re-sign Hampton, so I don’t see them drafting a NT that early.

I know, I should be the G.M. for the Lions… hell, a third grader could improve that team.

  4. He Hate Me says:

It is surprising only in the fact that you did not address DT which could be a major need if PWill retires. Kennedy is not an every down guy and Evans is a backup at best.

Brown & Canfield are nice picks though. When McKinnie & Loadholt got hurt temporarily in the Carolina game (I believe), it was not pretty. So getting Brown is not bad as he is a better fit for the zone blocking scheme. But I will say that the TOA likes their tackles to have about 25 or more pounds on them and there is a question as to if Brown can add that much more weight. Canfield will not last until the end of round 3 and for those that dont know, he played in a pro style offense and completed close to 70% of his passes. I like him a lot.

Still I would take Mike Iupati in round 1 and Lamaar Houston in round 2 using your mock as a guide.

Here is my idea on what the Viking should do this off season. Because of the uncapped year the Vikings will be severely limited in free agency and it really isn’t even worth discussing.

My thoughts are that the Vikings should trade future picks, tag Edwards with the 2nd round tender which would almost ensure another team will sign him, and try and trade Berrian to the Chiefs or Ravens. I think they need to get as many picks in the first two rounds as possible. Then next year, there should eb a new CBA, they can go all out in free agency and may be an attractive destination.

Here is my plan which of course takes willing partners …

    1. Vikings trade with Oakand. We get their #39 (2nd), #69 (3rd), & #199 (7th). They get our 2001 1st round, #93 (3rd), #189 (6th), & #222 (7th). Oakland does not have a first round pick in 2011.
    2. Vikings get Tampa Bay’s #44 (2nd) for Edwards. Tampa may be the team to sign Edwards.
    3. Vikings get Kansas City’s #51 (2nd) or Baltimore’s #59 (2nd) for Berrian.

We end up with these picks …

    32. (1st) Jason Pierre-Paul DE
    39. (2nd) Navorro Bowman LB
    44. (2nd) Lamaar Houston DT
    51. (2nd) Brandon Ghee CB
    64. (2nd) Arellious Benn WR
    69. (3rd) Chad Jones S
    125. (4th) John Jerry OG
    158. (5th) Andrew Quarless TE
    Comp. (6th) Corey Peters DT
    199. (7th) Roger Saffold OT

… the picks could be different but the point is that the Vikings would get 6 picks in the top 69 and they would free up Berrian’s salary and Kleinsasser’s salary too. they could use this money to give AP, Rice, & Greenway new deals.

In another of your posts you asked why did the Vikings move Allen’s roster bonus onto this year’s cap. I think it is to give AP a new deal and probably Rice & Greenway too.

I think the TOA should try and get more picks this year and go all out in free agency next year. A guy like Jason Campbell would not be bad IMO.

    He Hate Me,

You have some great ideas! Great posts, I hope you stick around and comment throughout the offeseason.

  7. He Hate Me says:

    Thanks Adam.

I will be sure to comment during this offseason.

My current mock without any trades and keeping Edwards & Berrian would be …

    1. Maurkrice Pouncey OG/OC 6-5 320
I think the TOA will like his position flexibility since he played guard and tackle at Florida. I also think that Iupati will be gone.

    2. Lamaar Houston DT 6-2 300
I would be very surprised if he is here but maybe the Vikings get lucky like they did last year with Loadholt.

    3. Major Wright S 6-0 200
He is a hitter and very fast.

    4. Pat Angerer 6-2 235 LB
I like to get a solid backup for Brinkley.

    5. Andrew Quarless 6-5 248
Solid TE to backup Shiancoe and take over in a couple of years plus allows for Kleinsasser to be put out to pasture

    6. Patrick Stoudamire 5-11 195 CB
DII prospect that is fast and breaks up passes

    6. John Fletcher 6-6 280 DE
Perfect guy to backup and may start eventually

    7. Corey Peters 6-3 295
Another DT to add to the rotation.
