RFA’s Available At Decent Value

Now that free agency is under way, and all the restricted free agents have been given their respective tenders, it is time for me to participate in some pointless speculation… and have fun doing it!

So, let’s pretend that the Vikings go crazy and decide to give up essentially their entire 2010 draft.  Here is an example of what they could do.

FIRST ROUND:  Jared Gaither is only 24 years old and has established himself as one of the top left tackles in the NFL.  In a division that could soon feature Julius Peppers and Kyle Vanden Bosch, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Vikings surrender the first rounder required to nab Gaither.  This would also allow them to deal headcase Bryant McKinnie away to the highest bidder.

SECOND ROUND:  There are a pair of very high quality defenders that were tendered at only the second round.  Browns middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson and Panthers cornerback Richard Marshall would both provide the Vikings with decent value and they’d only have to give up the #62 pick.

THIRD ROUND:  Most people would like to see the Vikings grab a mauling guard in the first or second round in this draft.  Well, for just a third round pick, the Vikes could steal away Evan Mathis from the Bengals.  Mathis is a run blocking beast that also didn’t give up a single sack last season.

So, assuming the Vikings could trade Bryant McKinnie for an early second round pick at the worst, this plan could give the Vikings a truly elite left tackle, a starting caliber inside linebacker or cornerback, and a guard that is an upgrade to Hererra.  Then they’d left with a second rounder (from McKinnie trade), a fourth rounder, two fifths (one from compensatory), a sixth and a seventh.

Not saying they should do it, but I really like some of the value out there.

Oh, and if you really want Brett Favre back, I hear Anquan Boldin is available for a mere third round draft pick.

Carlos Rogers was tendered as 1st round. However Carlos has made some indiscriminate remarks about Snyder and wants out of Shanahan’s Washington.

Rogers is not an NFL elite cornerback and has played beheath potential. My view – he is superior to Dunta Robinson and Leigh Bodden. However, no team would give a 1st round pick up to acquire him. Would suggest Vike dangle a 2nd come draft day and some later round pics.

  2. bigjohnny84 says:

Dang Adam these thoughts make alot of sense. Especially the first rounder for Gaither.

  3. Purple Charlie says:

Hey Adam, I like all 3 round Suggestions, 3rd one, I was one of the guys barking about a guard…

Johnny, Jared Gaither over McKinnie Anyday!!!

Lost, I like your idea about the 2nd and possibly a later round…We need that help and Carlo might fit in better with the Vikings…

  4. krugjr says:

haven’t heard TJ’s name mentioned by any analyst or seen his name on anyone’s list in the last couple days……anyone heard anything?

  5. krugjr says:

    any 2010 wonderlics released yet?

  6. VAVike says:

1)Trade Mount M for a second and a fourth/fifth, he’s worth that on paper, first round pick/pro bowler, go get Gaither.
2)Now you have 2 round 2 picks. If you would like, go after DQwell, but a DT/CB is a must.
3)Mathis with our third is a great plan, you’ll not find as much value in the draft.
4)Two 4ths – DT/CB whatever not above, RB or QB
    5)Two 5ths – OL/DL Depth, or S
6)Slot receiver so we canuse Percy in the backfield on third down
    7) Depth, Depth, Depth…..(Think Jamarca Sanford)
This can all change depending on Hicks-Sapp-Taylor-Kennedy being signed. I hope they all get huge contracts.

**I do like the Marlin Jackson rumors, and believe Jones, LT, and Westbrook are still possible. Now add Lito Sheppard to that list.
Remember released players are free game.

  7. Purple Charlie says:

VAVike, You have some good ideas, along with quite a few other guys, It will be interesting how the FA part unfolds…

  8. Lost Viking says:

Chester Taylor is being offered $ 8 million guaranteed. Taken over a three of four year deal that’s not insurmountable. Also, its being offered by the Bear; not anybody’s first choice – Lovie, Jerry Angelo, Mike Martz, Mike Tice, Jay Cutler, aging Defense, etc.

If Viking can define their 3rd down game they can find a replacement RB. What we really need is more reliable 3rd and short blocking so we don’t have to resort to passing on 3rd and 2.
Some say Left Tackle. I say Right Guard.

Vikes set to land a big fish?

No, it’s not Julius Peppers or Karlos Dansby or Antrel Rolle, or a trade for a QB like Donovan McNabb or Jason Campbell … not a metaphorical “big fish.”

But the Minnesota Vikings do appear to be on the cusp of signing Marlin Jackson, the cornerback who was not tendered by the Colts, according to Chip Scoggins on Twitter. As Scoggins notes, Jackson has had some injury issues in the past, but he will help bolster a secondary that needs an upgrade

    Jason worth a first-rounder?

Jason Campbell | Redskins | Interested: Vikings?, Bills?, Rams? Top Email

We continue to be interested to see how Jason Campbell fits into the Washington Redskins’ long-term plans at QB, given the likelihood that they will draft a gunslinger this April. We learned on Wednesday from NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the Skins will tender him an RFA offer at the first round level.

A rumor that gained some momentum last week has the Buffalo Bills trading away Donte Whitner and a draft pick in exchange for Campbell, according to Jason Reid of the Washington Post. NFC East blogger Matt Mosley did some checking and reports that there is no such deal in the works; the team expects him to be on the 2010 roster at the very least unless another team “blows the Skins away with a trade offer.”

But now, for just one first-rounder (and a contract offer that the Redskins choose not to match), another team can add a QB who has franchise potential. Looking down the list of teams that pick towards the end of the first round, one sticks out as a possibility, based on a few hypotheticals: the Minnesota Vikings at No. 30. Give up the 30th pick in exchange for more security should a certain someone call it quits for good? Hmmm … this one could work as long as they lose a free agent (oh, there you are, Chester Taylor, thanks for everything)

  11. Lost Viking says:

Also, don’t offer AAA free agent contracts to B grade/special team-type free agents, eg. Paymah, Cirucuii, Wade,

  12. wtfvikesfan says:

    Kevin Seifert
LT to Minny, Chester to DET
“If we’re going to limit this conversation to the NFC North, here’s a pretty interesting possibility: Tomlinson signs with Minnesota and takes over the role vacated by Chester Taylor. And where might Taylor vacate to? Why not Detroit, where he grew up? Like Tomlinson, Taylor is 31. But he has much less mileage on his body — nearly 1,800 less carries, in fact — and would be an ideal insurance short-term answer for the Lions as [Kevin] Smith rehabilitates his knee and shoulder injuries.”

    Dunta’s decision by Friday?
    8:42

Dunta Robinson | Texans | Interested: Buccaneers?, Vikings?, Cardinals?, Ravens?, Jets?, Steelers?, Titans?, Falcons? Top Email

Free agent CB Dunta Robinson will be drawing a fair amount of interest given his athleticism and age. Earlier speculation put the Vikings, Titans, Ravens, Packers and Eagles amongst the teams to take a look, and Don Banks of Sports Illustrated thinks Tennessee might be the best fit. Banks also notes that the Titans have a knack for signing away talent from division rivals.

But one team that had publicly vowed to remain conservative this offseason might be way in the lead as of Friday morning. The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain tweeted that “Dunta Robinson is on his way to Atlanta. Expect him to sign with the Falcons today.” It should be noted, too, that Robinson is a Georgia native, per McClain

  14. Fragile Freds says:

Freds doesn’t know Marlin Jackson from Marlin Perkins, but two times with a blown knee? Yikes!

It appears Marlin played some safety with the Colt. Nice to have a guy that can go both ways…well, you know, corner or safety.

I guess you have to rely on Viking specialist Dr. Kildare to make a call on the viability of this dude’s spaghetti strapped knees.

Freds is trying to think of a number of corners who have returned from this type of problem with great effectiveness. Thoughts?

  15. Mister Bonkers says:

I was at SC when Dunta was there. He got game.

  16. coolio says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Chester just signed with the bears

  17. olderthandirt says:

coolio ……… POOP!!! I’d rather had him stay. Now he’ll be making clutch third downs for Jay Cutler.

Great interview from Brett on Jay Leno last night. Here’s the link:

  18. coolio says:

bears are getting julius peppers too. The vikings need to upgrade oline soon. im getting scared

    • Purple Charlie says:

Coolio, I had a feeling the bears were going to get Peppers, Was really hopeing We would keep Chester or he would go to the Lions…

I think the Vikings, as you said , Will Definitely have to upgrade the O-Line…

Hutch will have a better year now that he has had surgery, Draft a Monster of a RG to take Herrera’s place, Hopefully Sullivan will have a better year and that will open holes in the middle…

    • Fragile Freds says:

Get off the ledge Coolies, time and time again we see free agents kick off their tires and flop. Peppers will start off strong, and fizzle when the winds start blowing and temps fall in Chicagoo. Dude got his money, now watch him go strong as a part timer. Don’t worry, old Chester will have no luck running against our boys.

  19. coolio says:

true this is a tough year. revamped bears twice, packers without huge oline issues twice, saints on the road, jets on the road, new england on the road, and plilly on the road + dallas and arizona at home

  20. Nume says:

Jared Gaither is definitely looking more appealing after seeing peppers go to chicago :P. Getting him and a solid right guard would definitely help the team greatly and I think would be enough to get them to win the division again, and potentially make a run for the sbowl (presuming favre comes back…).

  21. Fragile Freds says:

    2, 4, 6, 8 who do we appreciate?
    Chester (clap, clap, stomp, clap)
yo Chester (clap, clap, stomp, clap)
Chester(clap, clap, stomp, clap) yo Chester(clap, clap, stomp, clap)
    2, 4, 6, 8 who is goona dominate?
Not Chesta (clap, clap, stomp, clap)Not Chesta.

Thanks for the memories Chester. Nice dude, decent player, high class man.

Sorry to see him go, but Freds officially over it! Now that that’s done, let’s go and gets us a FREE AGENT!!!

  22. Purple Charlie says:

    Freds, Thats the Right Spirit!!!

    Go Vikings!!!

  23. Fragile Freds says:

What’s this that Fred hears Ben Rothlismolester has struck again? Heck your old pal has one bad boat ride and he’s run out of town and here Ben has been accused again of sexual assult?

    Ben, Ben, Ben….

  24. bigjohnny84 says:

Did Freds get a new employer yet?

  25. Fragile Freds says:

    Good golly!

They just released a picture of Ben’s new gal… Ben, just because the girls wears your colors doesn’t mean she wants you to forcefully “marry her”.

  26. bigjohnny84 says:

Geesh, they better get Big Ben in sexaholics annonymous

    • CalVkg says:

i think tiger woods is gonna help him out on that

man, our o-line better get with it
if Gaither’s worth a damn, fine

  27. Fragile Freds says:

    Johnnys,

Don’t be so shallow, that girl has a wonderful personality.

    • bigjohnny84 says:

Right Freds and she’ll keep ya warm in the winter and cool in the summer, got it. But I’ll still have to pass on that one.

      • Purple Charlie says:

Johnny, You asked me what Freds is the best at…

Freds is the best at not being prejudice of women…

  28. Fragile Freds says:

    Johnnys,

Sometimes Fred wonders about you boy. Just because a gal is big boned, doesn’t mean she should be looked down on. Freds loves all of the women, big ones, small ones, smart ones, dumb ones, rich ones, poor ones, white ones , black ones, Norwegian ones (especially after getting that recent news from Ole about those gals), shy ones, loud ones….drunk ones.

Expand your horizons Johnny Boy! A lot of nice gals out there.

  29. Lost Viking says:

Well said, Freddy. After all, dating a big boned girl can be a lot like riding a moped?

Both fun to ride. You just wouldn’t want to be seen on one.

  30. Lost Viking says:

Well, that’s what they said in Norway
