A Few Quick Hits

There are not enough new links yet to do a “links of the week” feature, but let’s take a quick look around the internet at a few issues:

  • Vikings owner Zygi Wilf gave an awkward speech in opposition of the overtime rules change at the NFL’s owner meetings this week.  The speech made little sense when you dissect it.  However, I do think that Wilf knows that by changing the rules the NFL has opened the door for the Vikings to have Super Bowl hopes dashed in all new ways.  Just when us fans thought the Vikings have found every possible way to miss out on getting a ring, a new set of overtime rules creates a whole new set of circumstances in which the Vikings can fail.  I know, it sounds bitter, but eventually it might just be true.
  • I agree with Roger Goodell’s effort to make the end of the season more exciting by having week 17, and most of week 16, be divisional matchups only.  It will go a long ways towards keeping many teams’ playoff hopes alive until the bitter end and less likely to see teams clinch early enough to rest their starters and put in the scrubs.  This new rule could affect the Vikings more than most teams, however, because it increases the potential for late season matchups in the cold weather of Green Bay or Chicago, as Vikings Update points out.  Given that this season we’ll see the Vikings visit additional cold weather areas such as New England, New York, and Philly should make the Vikings put improving their run game to the top of their offseason priority list.
  • Is it a coincidence that all of the sudden the Vikings are being asked if Bryant McKinnie will be traded this offseason?  No reporters really had the nerve to ask those questions a month ago, so what has changed between then and now?  I may be reading too much into this, but something tells me there is going to be more on this story very soon.
  • I feel like I have done a pretty good job of not beating the dead horse that is the Brett Favre retirement storyline.  I have actually been fairly content with the team waiting for word out of the Favre camp.  However, after seeing a few quarterbacks change teams and now a flurry of Donovan McNabb trade rumors, it sure would be comforting to get confirmation for the man himself, wouldn’t it?
  • During the regular season the Vikings offense was penalized 101 times (ninth worst in NFL) which gave the other teams 757 yards.  The defense was penalized 109 times (fifth worst in NFL) for 902 yards.  Recently retired V.P. of Officiating Mike Pereira says that he hopes to join an NFL coaching staff in an unprecedented role that can best be described as a “Penalty Prevention Coach.”  I for one think this is one of the most progressive and innovative ideas to come out of the NFL in many years.  A coach may hesitate to agree to bring Periera on board in fear of his coaching making players hesitant to play, but parameters can be set on the position to make it useful without a doubt.  I, for one, think the Vikings should be jumping in line to bid on Periera’s services.

Adam, that is interesting about McKinnie. It’s almost like Ziggy was trying to pump up his value.

Adam, Like you said with the Cold weather games this year, I Really hope they put the run game at the top of the list…

Johnny, Ziggy is a hard person to read… I have a feeling McKinnie will be starting this season… It’s just a feeling…

Agreed, I still think odds are good he stays with the Vikes.

I just find it odd that reporters are asking that question now when they all ignored it in February. Its almost like one of them got a tip and they’re trying to confirm it so they can actually use it. Why is it coming up now all of the sudden for no apparent reason?

Ya he’ll probably start for us this year, but the way this is shaking out, for the right offer he’ll be gone.

I wish teams would hate coming to Minnesota late in the year; I’ve never liked the triple H. But I did like prowrestling although I was more of a Road warriors guy. In fact I’m pretty sure Animals son is a linebacker somewhere (heard it this football season but that’s all I remember). Sorry for the wrestling tangent. Bud Grant said that in the playoffs against the Rams the weather was worth 7 points for the Vikes. Our O-line is built for cold weather, except for Sully. Hope the new stadium deal gets moving this session. The Star Tribune seems like it is giving conflicting reports. The Vikes feel it will be addressed, or at least acknowledged. Adam as for feeling bitter, if you’re worried about getting your heart broken you’ve picked a bad team. Minnesota football (both Vikes & Gophers) will break your heart. Just as soon as you’re ready to believe in them you get crushed (’98 was the worst). Here’s to suffering together.
