Vikings Land Free Agent Montgomery

Today, the Vikings brought in defensive end Mike Montgomery for a visit who most recently played for the Packers.

Today, the Vikings also signed defensive end Mike Montgomery who most recently played for the Packers.

According to Access Vikings, he has agreed to a one year deal which means he will get to face off against his old team on at least two occasions.

At age 26, Montgomery now represents the fourth defensive end on the Vikings roster that is entering his contract year.  Ray Edwards, Brian Robison, and Jayme Mitchell are all scheduled to become free agents (depending on CBA negotiations) at the end of this season, as well.

The Vikings were in a similar situation at cornerback last season with Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin, and Benny Sapp all in contract years.  Winfield and Griffin received contract extensions and Sapp re-signed after free agency started.

This is only the second free agent signing for the Vikings this season.  Since Montgomery was cut by the Packers instead of being a traditional UFA, he does not count against their “Final Four Plan” nor should he factor into next year’s compensatory draft pick awards.
