Really? That’s The Best You Can Do?

I know that I am considered just a monkey with a keyboard (I get paid in bananas) with no formal journalism training, so I should be the last one to gripe about journalistic standards, but I am growing quite weary of some of the local coverage of the Vikings.

First, there is a story on the Pioneer Press today about Favre attending a Southern Miss football practice on Monday.  The story contained this sentence:

“Southern Miss football coach Larry Fedora says former Eagles and Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre dropped by practice on Monday.”

The last time I checked Favre never played for the Philadelphia Eagles.  Also, the last time I checked, Southern Miss’ football team is the Golden Eagles.  Also, the last time I checked, he is not a FORMER Minnesota Vikings quarterback.  He is, however, a former Packers quarterback which gets no metnion at all.

Okay, that’s a small thing.  But let’s move on to the Star Tribune.

Yesterday, Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins went on a mission to identify as many player’s attending today’s workouts at Winter Park as they could.  If Judd would’ve read an email I sent him a long time ago, he could have saved a lot of time (and identified more players) simply by using Vikings Gab as a resource.

Apparently we aren’t considered a legitimate source of info even though I linked every report to its original source.  Okay, so Vikings Gab got shunned, no big deal.

Then, however, after identifying numerous players without giving any sources they put this line next to Torrell Troup’s name:

“Viking Update reported this one”

Really?  Vikings Update is a legitimate source that has reported nearly every player they mentioned over the course of the last month-and-a-half but Access Vikings only feels the need to name them as a source next to one of the names?

I would expect more from Zulgad and Scoggins, especially if I was one of their (assumingly very few) “premium” customers.  Which brings us to yet another trend that is an absolute joke.

Access Vikings introduced their Premium Content a while back and I would be downright pissed if I had been one of the fools to buy it.

First of all, to not name any sources on their “visits list” is downright shameful.

Second, the only premium content currently available is a column by Matt Blair called “The offseason has changed” which has been there for what seems like at least a month now.  So if I pay you my twenty bucks (which is roughly 44 bananas in today’s economy) I can have the privilege of reading about one extra “premium” story per month?  Awesome!  Sign me up!

Third, the whole idea of “premium” content is incredibly stupid to begin with.  I can promise you that they (and Vikings Update is guilty of this as well) are not providing you with any information, opinions, or analysis that cannot be found either here at Vikings Gab or elsewhere around the web at no cost.

There, that’s my rant for the week.

To be honest, I enjoy reading the blogs (especially Vikings Gab) much more than mainstream media when it comes to sports. Yeah, most of us aren’t gathering the information first hand, but bloggers tend to have much more interesting insights than newspaper writers.

When you go to a blog like yours or mine there is opinion in the story. These guys want you to pay for regualr news that they just got from a random newspaper or site. Did they do much? No. It’s a joke to the point where us bloggers have the news on our blogs before vikings.com!

The vikings.com thing is typical for team’s official sites. They usually will not confirm something until/unless the team wants to make it official. They are in the business of selling the product that is the Vikings, not reporting news.

    Oh……………

I don’t get why people go there for news then. I mean they get so many veiws on their blogs for shallow and meaningless articles!

I really hate the fact espn has insider though. The thing is they get the news before other people and make us pay to read it. thats what make WTFVikesfan awesome!

I’ll bet you can count on one hand how many “premium” customers on the faux AV.

I still don’t understand those guys (C&J) and how they dissed all of us. Sure backfired on them though, didn’t it? heheheheh.

I got an email from BigJohnny84, and he just wanted to elt you guys know that all is well other than a computer virus keeping him from being able to comment. He’ll be back on the boards in no time!

  6. Fragile Freds says:

See that? Freds old pal Johnny got the whammy put on him for not clicking on Freds links.

What kind of sites carry viruses anyway? Fred will have to ask Johnny about the links he has been following.

  7. Johnnys says:

Freds, you shouldnt have sent me all those gory porn sites. Thanks alot! But if you must know the truth, my local computer repairman says he’s had over 40 computers already this week with the same issue. Geesh I cant even blame Freds for this one. And Mr. Charlie I should be back online tom. night. I had to beg and plead with my daughter to make this comment or gag and bind or whatever. Careful now Freds!

I used to read the Strib Vikings coverage, but got tired of the crappy articles that were often times rants about nothing we didn’t already know. I quit reading and came over to Vikings Gab as a result, and couldn’t be happier. Keep up the good work Adam!

only thing I ever wanted “those” writers to do was to ask some “tough” questions when Brad did a press conf, and they never really had the bells to do it…..other than that, anyone can do their job…..

    GO VIKES!!!!!
