McKinnie Has A Mixed Week

Anyone who visits this site with any regularity knows that I am not a big fan of Bryant McKinnie’s actions on the field or off.

He didn’t do himself any favors with me when he threw teammates Madieu Williams and Tyrell Johnson under the bus by declaring safety as the biggest offseason need for the Vikings in a recent live chat at NFL.com.

The entire chat can be viewed here.  Here are a few highlights that don’t include him singling out the safety position instead of towing the company line and making a generic statement about the whole team needing to improve.

  • McKinnie uses an injury as an excuse for his poor game against the Panthers in 2009, and says that he is looking forward to facing Julius Peppers two times a year.
  • He is another person to add to the “I think Favre will return” list.
  • McKinnie has his own record label called Swagga Entertainment and he has an artist named Pleasure P that is up for three Grammy’s.
  • In his purple uniform, McKinnie feels like Barney or Grimace.
  • The nickname for McKinnie and teammate Phil Loadholt is “The Twin Cities.”
  • Before entering the NFL, MCKinnie was a fan of the Eagles and the Packers.
  • McKinnie expects injured teammate E.J. Henderson to be ready to join the team by training camp.

While McKinnie has received his fair share of criticism over the years, it is only fair to point out the times when McKinnie’s heart seems to be as large as his frame would suggest.

Cierra Reese is a girl from Overtown, Florida that has had a rough go of it.  She was singled out by McKinnie because of her strength in dealing with her mother’s heart condition while trying to keep up with her studies at school.

McKinnie signed up to be a guest speaker at Overtown Youth Center when he surprised Cierra by bringing her on stage.  He told her that he was going to pay for her prom experience including her dress, her hair, and her limo.

Now, some of you may think of this as a small gesture, and for someone who makes millions it kind of is.  However, anyone who has ever been to high school (or sat through countless chick flicks) knows that most teenage girls consider prom to be one of the most important things in the history of the world.

Getting the red carpet treatment from a star athlete meant the world to her, I am sure of it.  Way to go, Bryant!

I have to wonder if this was just a PR move. He has never shown that he cares about anything but partys and girls. He needs to do more things like this and change his whole attitude. Then some people could actually forgive him for some of his awful behavior.
