A Mad Rush Of Rushers

Ryan Matthews, Jahvid Best, Toby Gerhart, Ben Tate and Montario Hardesty have to be happy about how draft weekend went down.  If they started a club, the motto should be “Thank God for Texans!”

Here is why.

The Chargers made a big trade up in the first round to grab Ryan Matthews because they were afraid the Texans were after him.  Then at the end of the first round, the Lions got antsy when their guy, Jahvid Best was still on the board and they traded back into the first round and snagging him while the Vikings accumulated more picks.

Then, at pick number 51, the Vikings also panicked because the Texans were on the clock and they thought they would select Toby Gerhart.  So the Vikings traded up to select Gerhart, giving up their third and second rounder.

At 58, the Texans finally did get their new running back in Ben Tate after all that movement.

The Browns got nervous about the rush of running backs being taken and traded into the very next spot, selecting Montario Hardesty.

So, out of the five guys mentioned in the first paragraph of this article… four of them were traded up for.

Let me repeat that:

Teams TRADED UP for running back, and gave up good darn value too, in the SAME DRAFT where Antohony Dixon, Jonathan Dwyer, Charles Scott and James Stark could have been had for a mere sixth rounder.  The same draft that saw LaGarrette Blount, Stafon Johnson, and Rashawn Jackson could be available after the draft for no draft picks at all.

Only time will tell if these were smart trades by the respective teams, but I have serious doubts about the wisdom of the teams that participated in such madness… and, yes, that includes the Vikings.

I saw a blurb about Richardson possibly not being needed with the Jets….that would be an incredible upgrade if they could entice him back for one more year.

Gerhart will be a great pick. He is a relentless player, as evidenced by his load of 30+ carries per game at Stanford. He will do nothing but help us. If this draft class was deep in any position, it was deep in runningbacks. I think Jonathan Dwyer should have gone higher, but the rest of the late round and undrafted guys simply weren’t that good or were thugs (LaGarrette Blount).
