For Those Who Care…

I know many of you like keep track of my predictions in an effort to feed me some crow or maybe even toss me a compliment.

For those who are interested in such practices, you might be interested to take a look at how I predicted (back in February) how the Vikings would address the running back and cornerback position.  Click those links and you will have all that info at your disposal.

In short, I predicted the Vikings would pick a running back in the third round or later.  While I missed that by a few rounds, I did manage to specifically mention Toby Gerhart.

As far as cornerbacks go, I think I nailed that one right on the head.  I suggested that the Vikings would trade out of #30 and pick a cornerback with their first pick.  I also said they would pick another corner in their first three picks if they didn’t pick up a mid-level free agent, which they did (Sheppard).

So, not to brag, but that is a pretty good track record for my Offseason Preview segments.  So, if I go off of those February articles, what will the Vikings do tomorrow?  Here is the gist:

I predicted that the Vikings take a guard in rounds 2-5.  That means the Vikes have two more rounds to take a guard for this prediction to pan out.  (Mitch Petrus?)

I basically said the Vikings would take a defensive tackle at any point of the draft but only if the value was so great to be considered a steal.  (Cam Thomas?)

I expected the Vikings to take an outside linebacker in round four or later.  (A.J. Edds?)

Pick an offensive tackle before the draft is over, possibly sooner than we would expect.  (Bruce Campbell or Jason Fox?)

Pick a safety sometime in the later rounds.  (Myron Rolle?)

Take a late round defensive end to compete for a roster spot.  (Everson Griffen?)

Possibly spend a sixth or seventh round pick on a wide out sleeper.  (Pat Simonds?)

Pick a late round quarterback to hold a clipboard and act as a “camp arm” while the team waits for Favre to show up.  (Rusty Smith?)

Find an undrafted rookie fullback.  (John Connor?)

I predicted that the Vikings would not take a middle linebacker unless he was a significant upgrade over Jasper Brinkley, of which no guys left fit that description.

I also predicted the Vikings would not take a tight end, but I started to doubt that prediction a while back.

  1. […] Regardless, one of the most popular features I ran last offseason were the “Offseason Previews” in which I break the Vikings down position-by-position and do my best to highlight their options.  Last year, I actually did fairly well in predicting which free agents would be retained by the Vikings, that they would be almost completely absent from free agency, and what positions they would target in the draft.
