The Vikes On Deck… Again

For the second day in a row, the Vikings are the owners of the second pick of the day.

As part of the Vikings first round trade with the Detroit Lions, the Vikings now have the second pick of the first round.  Let’s explore what they might do with it and who is left that might be worth it (BOLD names indicate my favorites):

QUARTERBACK:  The Vikings possibly made a statement about their faith in Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson when they shunned Jimmy Clausen… twice.  Tomorrow may be the day, however, that they bring in some competition at the position.  Remaining players of interest include Tony Pike, John Skelton, Dan LeFevour, Jarrett Brow, Jevan Snead, and Sean Canfield.

RUNNING BACK:  With the Vikings taking Toby Gerhart, I would be shocked to see them select another running back (or fullback for that matter) during tomorrow’s proceedings.

WIDE OUT:  Again, I would be surprised if the Vikings specifically targeted a wide out because of their current depth on the roster.  A later guy is possible and there is definitely some talent still out there.

OFFENSIVE LINE:  Artis Hicks is really the only player that left the Vikings this year that they have not replaced.  There are a number of solid linemen still available and I think there is a good chance that the Vikings target one of them with their first pick tomorrow.  These players include Bruce Campbell, Selvish Capers, Ciron Black, Jason Fox, Brandon Carter, Mitch Petrus, and Matthew Tennant.

TIGHT END:  The Vikings have sure shown some interest in tight ends this year, and I don’t know that they’ll be able to escape tomorrow without drafting one.  Kim Kleinsasser’s play was disappointing last season, and the Vikes may be looking to get younger.  These players include Aaron Hernandez, Antony McCoy, Dorin Dickerson, and Dennis Pitta.

DEFENSIVE END:  The Vikings apparently do not plan on trading Ray Edwards (or it probably would’ve happened by now) so defensive end doesn’t appear to be much of a need.  Edwards, Robison, and Montgomery are in contract years, however.  The best player available tomorrow might be defensive end Everson Griffen who seems like he has to be considered by every single team at this point after being projected as a first rounder.  Other players include Ricky Sapp, Corey Wooten, Greg Hardy, and George Selvie.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE:  The Vikings reportedly showed some interest in Albert Haynesworth which may be an indication that the Vikings would like to find a replacement for Pat Williams this year, or an insurance policy if he and Kevin Williams are suspended for StarCaps.  I mentioned Everson Griffen as being the best player available but Cam Thomas is a big fat guy that needs to be considered a candidate to replace Pat Williams.  Other defensive tackles include Geno Atkins, Arthur Jones, and Al Woods.

LINEBACKER:  The Vikings did not lose any linebackers this season but E.J. Henderson’s status is unclear as e rehabs his broken leg.  Also, Chad Greenway and Ben Leber are both entering their contract year.  I suspect the Vikings are disappointed that Rennie Curran got drafted at the end of the third round as they may have hoped to draft him as a potential successor for Ben Leber.  Linebackers still available that may be considered include A.J. Edds, Dekoda Watson, Roddrick Muckelroy, Eric Norwood, and Jamar Chaney.

CORNERBACK:  Given that the Vikings recently signed Lito Sheppard and spent their first pick on Chris Cook I would be surprised to see them snag another cornerback before the seventh round if at all.  There is some solid talent still on the board, however.

SAFETY:  The Vikings seem content to have Madieu Williams, Tyrell Johnson, and Jamarca Sanford compete in training camp next season.  But that may not keep them from investing a late pick to add another guy into the mix.  Some of the talent left includes Larry Asante, Reshad Jones, Darrell Stuckey, and Myron Rolle.

In the end, I think the Vikings have some very solid value available to them.  I would feel safe narrowing down the potential #2 picks to Everson Griffen, Cam Thomas, Aaron Hernandez, Tony Pike, John Skelton, Mitch Petrus, Geno Atkins, Reshad Jones, or Myron Role… but after the events in the first three rounds… I am fairly certain I have no idea what the Vikings will do.
