Stadium Efforts See Ups And Downs

I have some friends and family informing me that all the “buzz” in Minnesota right now revolves around the Vikings most recent legislative efforts to secure a plan to build a new stadium.

Two days ago, a bipartisan bill was introduced to the State of Minnesota.  While the bill was successful enough to withstand one committee vote and generate the aforementioned “buzz.”  However, the bill came to a dead end on Wednesday when a House Committee defeated the bil by a 9-10 vote.

The bill has produced plenty of criticism and also does not have the support of plenty of the State’s big players, such as Governor Tim Pawlenty.  Many seem to feel that while the new stadium is big news, there are more important matters that need to be addressed, including balancing the State budget… which is a tall enough task as it is.

While the outlook is glum for stadium supporters, there is a bit of good news for those that are looking for hope.  The bill was resurrected by a Senate Committee on Wednesday.  The new version of the bill includes Personal Seat Licenses (PSLs) as an added source of revenue.

Anyone who reads this site regularly knows that I have no interest in telling the fine folks of Minnesota how to spend their taxpayer dollars, but that I am a firm believer that sports (at all levels) have great benefits to society that stretch far beyond dollars and cents.

A long, long time ago the Greeks recognized the importance of competitive sport.  The benefits have lasted through the test of time, in every society on Earth, but perhaps such benefits are not great enough to keep the Vikings in their rightful home.

looks like the Viking organization is gonna have to earn a new stadium by winning the Super Bowl

interesting analogy using the ancient Greeks recognizing the importance of competitive sports

I would reference how the ancient cannibals stressed the importance of competitive eating, but this is a PG 13 blog

If Minneapolis loses the Vikings it would be a financial disaster for the city in the long run. I can understand that the State are reluctant to spend big at this point in time but it would keep generating revene for the city. Let’s hope they see sense and the new bill is more successful.
