Madden Ranking Observations

Recently, ESPN unveiled the player ratings for the Vikings in the latest installment of the Madden video game.  While I won’t bore you by listing each (you can view the entire list here) I do have a few observations to share.

  • They have Darius Reynaud listed as a running back as expected, but has an overall rating of 56 which puts him behind the other four running backs on the roster.  Ryan Moats is not on the roster yet.
  • Of all the starting offensive linemen, Anthony Herrera has the worst overall rating which is a 70.  They gave John Sullivan a 77 and Phil Loadholt a 79.
  • Ben Leber has finally gotten a bit of respect from EA.  After years of having awful ratings, he now is rated at 80.  Greenway is at 88, which is the highest rated linebacker for the Vikings.
  • EA apparently thinks the dropoff from E.J. Henderson to Jasper Brinkley is a large one.  They have Henderson rated at 85 and Brinkley at 69.  According to EA, Henderson is the Vikings best tackler, as he received a 95 rating in that category.
  • This should come as no surprise, but EA obviously thinks highly of the Vikings defensive line.  Jared Allen’s overall rating is 99, Kevin Williams is 97, Pat Williams is 88, and Ray Edwards is 85.
  • My award for “unfair ranking” goes to Brian Robison, who has an overall rating of 69.  Everson Griffen has never played a snap in the NFL but has a rating of 70.
  • Of the six Vikings listed on the roster as cornerbacks, Asher Allen comes in at last place with an overall rating of 68.  Rookie Chris Cook is fourth on that list with a rating of 70.  Lito Sheppard is third with an overall rating of 77, but his tackling abilities is rated as the worst of all Vikings defenders at a dismal 38.
  • Jamarca Sanford (71) still doesn’t beat out Tyrell Johnson (75) or Madieu Williams (74).  According to EA, Eric Frampton isn’t even on the team.
  • A new category of ranking players has been added this year called “swagger.”  This is weird to me, as it is such a hard thing to put a numerical value to and “swagger” isn’t always a good thing if you are talking about it in the Terrell Owens or Pacman Jones type of way.  Just to show that the “swagger” rating is complete nonsense, consider this:  Ryan Longwell has a swagger rating of 77 which is higher than Visanthe Shiancoe (75), Bernard Berrian (75), all the running backs except for Peterson, Anthony Herrera (65) who is known for being an animated dude, all the linebackers other than Erin Henderson (77), and Chris Kluwe (75) who has his own rock band.

Agreed Johnny, Last (rhymes with last, begins with an A) my … . First of all Chris Cook hasn’t even touched the field yet so, how do they know the kid is going to be a stunner? When Chris Cook comes out of the gate and records a forced fumble and a sack I’ll give the Cookie Monster his due proper’s. Whatever, Madden won’t be receiving any of my money this year. I refuse to pay for stupidity.

Last time I played a video game, it involved a little Italian trying to jump around on bricks and pipes, with coins flying all over the place. That was enough for me.
