Article Of Interest: John Sullivan

This is the time of year (training camp) when multiple fluff stories can be expected every day about little known players and how interesting of a story they have and how they are looking to beat the odds by making the roster.  You get to the end of those articles and realize that you have not really learned anything new.

That is why I would like to give a “tip o’ the hat” to Chip Scoggins of Access Vikings for his recent article on starting center John Sullivan.  The article reveals not one, not two, but a grand total of three very interesting tidbits that were, by all accounts, previously unknown to us Vikings fans.

First, the sad news that Sullivan’s father passed away in June at the age of 69.  His father was a lawyer that often travelling but went to nearly every game his son played at Notre Dame and was a regular at the Metrodome.

“He’s a big supporter,” Sullivan said. “I was close to him, but it’s going to happen eventually. Everybody has to go through it at some point with loved ones. We’ll be just fine. I have a great support system in Minnesota and back in Connecticut. A close-knit family. Three brothers and my mom, so we’ll be just fine.”

Scoggins asked Sullivan if he was going to play this season for his father and he had a classy answer, “will play this year for me and my teammates. He would want me to answer it that way.”

The next interesting revelation about Sullivan is that he was suffering from an ankle injury, comparable to Favre’s, ever since training camp of last year.  He played all year with the injury and had surgery this offseason.  This provides us with what should be even more hope that Sullivan is primed for a much improved season this year.

The third revelation is one that may or may not ever become an issue.  The fact that the Vikings chose to keep Sullivan’s injury a secret, by not disclosing it on the weekly injury reports, could potentially result in punishment from the NFL.

After joining the Vikings, Brett Favre revealed that he had faced an undisclosed injury while with the Jets, and the NFL responded by fining the Jets $75,000, and Mangini and Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum $25,000 apiece.

While the NFL has also turned a blind eye to injury report discrepancies on many occasions, there is the outside chance that the Vikings could face punishment for not properly disclosing Sullivan’s injury in 2009.

  1. I hope Sullivan can indeed show improvement this year. Going from Birk to Sullivan last season was an obvious step down, and it showed TONS in the running game.

  2. Viking John says:

Yes Sullivan needs to improve. Birk by the way is starting training camp on the PUP list. He has a hurt neck or something.
    Go Vikes

  3. B. Grant says:

Good story, Adam. Every player has a personal and often unknown side of things that fans don’t know about. They have families and owies and so forth. Nice for you (and Chip) to get this one out there.

Hang in there Vike lovers. Only 43 days to “the rematch”. Yes, 43 Nate Wright days until the day of revenge on those Saints!

  4. Ole says:

Sullivan ain’t a dummy, he attended N.D. Wish I could say the same for McKinnie

  5. Viking John says:

Sounds like Webb has signed. 3 to go.
    Go Vikes
