Kelley Washington Is Apparently Of Interest

Sidney Rice, Bernard Berrian, and Percy Harvin are expected to make a serious case for being labeled the best receiving trio in the NFL during the 2010 season.  Behind them is Jaymar Johnson, Greg Lewis, and Darius Reynaud (who, let’s face it, is really a wide out) who each contribute to the offense and special teams in their own way.  If you look even further down the depth chart you will see a group of young hopefuls in Taye Biddle, Marquis Hamilton, Marko Mitchell, Logan Payne, and Ray Small.

So, with 11 receivers (10 if you don’t count Reynaud) on the roster then you wouldn’t really think the Vikings would make signing another receiver a priority right before the start of training camp, right?  Wrong.

According to Judd Zulgad of Access Vikings the team has some interest in veteran receiver Kelley Washington.

Washington was drafted by the Bengals in the third round of 2003.  He played there for four years before spending two years with the Patriots.  He had his best season in 2009 (34 catches, 431 yards, and 2 touchdowns) as a member of the Baltimore Ravens.

He had three catches for 48 yards at the Metrodome in week six of last season.

At 6’ 3” and 217 pounds, the Vikings motives in signing a guy like Washington are not entirely clear.  Perhaps they think that he is on the upswing of his career and can contribute enough to at the very least provide tough competition throughout training camp.

Why are they so hell bent on WRs, a position of least need, and keep ignoring the o-line? Doesnt make any sense.

Hope this doesn’t mean that Sid Rice’s hip is more injured than we though.

Nothing wrong with taking a look at this guy. The Vikes do have questions at WR. Cheech and his headaches forces the purple to keep one more guy than normal. Bernie, has a history of injury. If they go this route, he will compete with Lewis. This is not the year to rely on young talent at back up WR.

Freds – I’d like to see them “take a look” at a ball holding coach and a blocking scheme coach while they’re at it. A little depth in the OL would sure help, too, but I don’t see that happening now.

  5. We don’t need another receiver!!

Speaking of wide outs, job I wouldn’t want right now… Wide receiver coach for the Cincinnati Bengals. Can you imagine what those meetings will be like now? “Chad, Terell, please put away your Droids!”

I will be very surprised if that mix works.
