Clearing Something Up

I saw some discussion going on about when exactly Sidney Rice will be available to the Vikings, especially after Vikings V.P. Rick Speilman made a confusing comment during the broadcast of their final preseason game.

Rice was placed on the PUP list by the Vikings and is reported to be “ineligible to play in the first six games of the regular season.”  Speilman made it sound like he’s eligible to return in time for week six’s game against the Cowboys.

So, the question also is whether or not the team’s week four bye week counts as a “week” in which Rice cannot play.

Indeed, the Star Tribune has the answer for you.

“After Minnesota’s sixth game, at Green Bay on Oct. 24, the team will have three more weeks to decide whether to activate Rice or end his season by putting him on injured reserve,” reads the article.  That means that Rice is not actually eligible to return to an actual game setting until their seventh game, which is in week eight versus the Patriots.

Hope that helps.

[UPDATE:  I asked Judd Zulgad to explain the situation.  He emailed me saying Rice is eligible to return, “the sixth game because he has to miss six weeks. I’m told it will be more like half the season.”  Judd takes a different stance on the rules than the linked article above, so now I am absolutley confused.]
