Vincent Jackson’s Hearing Scheduled For This Morning

At 8:00 a.m. EST Thursday morning, Vincent Jackson’s hearing will begin.

The hearing is to decide whether his three game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policies and his three week suspension for being a no-show for the Chargers can be served consecutively or concurrently.  The NFL argues he should be suspended for six weeks while the Player’s Association says that shouldn’t be the case if he is traded to a new team.

An arbitrator will listen to both sides of the story.  A decision could take up to five business days, but most people expect it to be announced on Friday.

Judd Zulgad of Access Vikings penned a very comprehensive look at this situation.

I’ve been pretty quiet in my opinion of the trade so far, mainly because I don’t know what “the trade” would entail.

Obviously, Jackson would be a great addition to any team, especially one that is currently missing their top wide out such as the Vikings.  He’s big, talented, and experienced.

As Zulgad points out, the rumor mill suggests that the Vikings had previously worked out a one year deal worth $7 million plus incentives.  The sticking point, however, was their inability to meet the demands of the Chargers.  Jackson is reportedly seeking a five year deal worth $50 million, $30 million of which would be guaranteed.

In an uncapped year, it is natural for fans to not give a hoot about player salaries, after all it is Zygi’s money, not ours.  So, that portion doesn’t seem too bad.

However, to give up valuable draft picks that could eventually contribute to the long term stability of the team and then only give the player a one year deal… that is more worrisome.

The Vikings currently have eight draft picks in 2011 (10 if they get a compensatory pick for both Artis Hicks and Chester Taylor, which they should) and they are going to need them provided the amount of turnover their roster is going to potentially see over the next two years.

I’m not sure how this is going to play out, but if it is decided that Jackson’s suspension will only span three weeks, then it should come to a head fairly quickly.

Just don’t get your hopes up too high, Vikings fans.  A lot of things would have to fall exactly into place in order for Vincent Jackson to wear purple this year.
