Payne The Spy?

When the Vikings traded for Randy Moss, it was only a matter of minutes before they were peddling merchandise under the slogan “Get Your 84 Gear Now.”

At that moment, the player occupying the number 84 was still practice squad receiver Logan Payne.  Payne was quickly released from the practice squad, however, after the trade for Randy Moss was official.

I personally was disappointed to see Payne released because he played so impressively in the preseason.  Now, however, it may be cause for more disappointment as Payne signed with the practice squad of none other than the New York Jets.

It is common practice, especially with the Jets, to sign low level players recently released by upcoming opponents with hopes of gaining some valuable knowledge about the other team and how they operate.

With only two days until game time, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that Rex Ryan has quizzed Payne about everything he knows in regards to the Vikings offense and special teams.

Or perhaps they simply like Payne’s skill set.  Afterall, they put in a waiver claim on him when the Vikings originally released him on cut-down day.  They didn’t get him because they were awarded Patrick Turner who had been released by division rivals the Miami Dolphins.  That is the reason that Payne made it through waivers and onto the Vikings practice squad in the first place.
