Moss: “I Cannot Play For This Coach”

As Randy Moss stood on Lambeau Field two weeks ago, with seconds ticking off the clock, he had his arms spread wide as he looked towards his sideline to try and convince somebody, anybody, to allow the offense to press forward and get some points on the board.

That image stuck with most of us fans throughout the week as the Vikings prepared to face Moss’ most recent former team, the New England Patriots.

Apparently, while we casually discussed the episode in chat forums, Moss had already made up his mind in regards to Brad Childress before he even left Green Bay.

“I cannot play for this coach,” Moss said to teammates in the vicinity as the club departed Green Bay, according to what an NFL source told the National Football Post. “I’m one and done.”

It only took Moss three games to find out what Matt Birk, Darren Sharper, and Marcus Robinson had already figured out before.  He found out that Brad Childress will not put up with players who think their success equals a right to make team-wide calls on and off the field.  Most of all, Childress refuses to allow his players to publicly criticize him or his staff.

In the past, Moss has been the master of talking his way off a team via immature episodes that make a grown man look like a twelve year old.  Perhaps Moss’ tirade directed at a local caterer was a strategic move to get as far away from Childress as he could, and as quickly as possible.

Or maybe it was simply Randy being Randy.

The Vikings traded for Moss, who was seeking a trade out of New England for no real reason other than that they hadn’t given him a long term contract, and then proceeded to not give him a long term contract.  It should surprise nobody that he couldn’t coexist with Brad Childress and it should surprise nobody that he continued to be unhappy.

For some reason, though, this whole thing was still very surprising.

After some reflection I agree ‘at this time’ it was a good move to get him out of the locker room. But, not through away another pick. I like the willingness to test the risk vs reward experiment with him, however, not throwing away the future.

  2. krugjr says:

the other 52 players can’t play for him either…..they just don’t (can’t) speak up…….nobody wants to follow prof childress, and if the wilfs keep him beyond this season, I’m switching my loyalties from the NFL to Curling……………………do they have a draft?

    GO VIKES!!!!! 4-12

moss is a jerk. the problem was, he just left the ‘best coach ever’, for Sam Drucker from Petticoat Junction
they weren’t going to sign him again and he didn’t want to play for a 2nd rate coach, but moss is still a jerk. a great talent, a low class person. watch the bills take him and then beat us for their only win of their season because he played hard for that one game. it could’ve worked with the right coach. childress was brought in as a reaction move after the love boat scandal, now can we please have a coach with some fire and talent to win titles???

Well, Randy, I think there are a number of coaches saying you can’t play for them, either. You even got yourself booted from New England, whom you supposedly love now. Grow up quickly, or get ready to enter the real world. We all have to learn not to say things we think. Its called discretion. If you think that’s wrong, well, good luck, cuz you’re gonna need it. What a sad waste of talent you represent.

I’ve just heard captain sabotage/childress press conference and he’s a straight up lier while he tells us the fans that he told the team Moss will be waived Favre says he found out thru TV and other players..WOW WHAT A COACH WE HAVE!!!

  6. Lost Viking says:

‘I can’t play for this coach’. Hank Baskett said the same thing before he left Minnesota the first time….

When Childress called Moss a ‘programmatic, non-fit’ I don’t think he was talking about his West Coast Offense (WCO). However, does Randy have difficulty fitting into various WCO. Is Moss’ temperment and ego sufficiently flexible to be a primary decoy?

Sidney Rices practices!!!! Rice taken off pup list.
    Moss to Titans.
